Item Non-Muslims in Sivas at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2002., 2002.) Özel, N. Bilge.; Abel, Işık Tamdoğan.The intensilication of the lise of Ottoman archival documents, mainly the court records, in studies dealing with the non-Muslim communities of the empire paved the way for the re-consideration of the paradigms of the millet system. This present study follows, in a way, the path that was opened by such studies. Considering that most of these studies were carried on the Arab provinces of the empire, the significance of a study that focuses on a certain locality in Ottoman Anatolia becomes apparent. While it contributes to the general picture concerning the non-Muslims of the empire, it also draws attention to the local differences. This study deals with the non-Muslim communities of Sivas in comparison to their Muslim counterparts at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries. It was based mainly on archival documents, six volumes of court records being the basic ones. After introducing the non-Muslim communities of the city in terms of their population, ethnicity and language, the study analyzes the role of religion as a dividing line between the members of different religions as far as the physical environment, material culture, and the social relations are concerned. On the macro level, the paradigms of the millet system are re-considered for the case of Sivas. Institute of Social Sciences, 2002., 2002.) Koç, Gülçin (Tunalı); Abel, Işık Tamdoğan.This thesis aims to study daily concerns of an Ottoman astrologer who lived in the first half of the 19th century in Ankara: Müderriszade Sadullah el-Ankaravi. Beside his prominent feature as an astrologer, he held the posts of naib, müftü and nakib-ül eşraf at different times. In addition to all of these, he was also a poet. His personal notes recorded at the edge of the calendars and horoscope collections were mainly analyzed in this study in order to understand the daily concerns of this multi-dimensional personality. Several other subjects like the places he lived in, his family, ilm-i nücum, his books, his education were considered to have a broader scope for the issue. Hence, the estate records and temettuat records about him were taken into consideration, either. This thesis does not belong to the genre of classical biography which was based on chronological order. Nevertheless, it has a particular type of narration which is tried to be emphasized throughout the thesis. For instance, an analogy between the daily concerns of Sadullah Efendi and his residence has been conducted in which his daily concerns has been narrated in the relevant rooms. Thus, it is aimed to approach the life of Sadullah Efendi as it was presented in his notes.
