Item An investigation of the effectiveness of cognitive behavior modification in the reduction of text anxiety(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute of Social Sciences, 1984., 1984.) Köksal, Falih.; Fişek, Güler Okman. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavior Modification in reducing the test anxiety, of twenty (8 male, 12 female) Robert College lycee three students. To asses the level of test anxiety of subjects in pre and post testing, STAI and TAS were used as instruments. The treatment was applied to the subjects in the experimental group while it was witheld from the control group. The hypothesis put forward was that, the decrease of test anxiety in the experimental group on STAI and TAS would be significantly greater than that in the control group. With the application of t-tests the results were found not to support this hypothesis. Various speculations as to the reasons for these findings were discussed and suggestions for further studies were given.Item Anxiety and depression in middle aged Turkish Retirees(Thesis (M.A.)- Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 1986., 1986.) Sağlam, Nilgün Uras.; Fişek, Güler Okman. The purpose of this study was to investigate the two psychological states, namely anxiety and depression, observed during the retirement. It was hypothesized that the non-engaged male retirees will show higher levels of anxiety and depression than alternatively working male retirees and secondly, the male retirees will show higher anxiety and depression levels than female retirees. To test the hypotheses two measurement instruments were used: The State Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Beck Depression Inventory. The sample was consisted by 20 non-engaged male retirees, 20 alternatively working male retirees, and 20 nonengaged female retires. An appropriate group of alternatively working female retirees was not found. The results indicate that our hypotheses are supported~ Non-engaged male retires showed the highest anxiety and depression levels while non-engaged female retirees showed the lowest anxiety and depression levels. However, further research is needed in this area since the sample of this study, consisted by highly educated with high income retirees, do not reflect the conditions of all Turkish retires.Item Anxiety-perceived control-perceived danger in industrial workers a study on coal miners(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 1985., 1985.) Karaveli, Deniz.; Fişek, Güler Okman. This study was carried out in the Kozlu area of Zonguldak Coal Mine Industry in order to compare the level of anxiety between uriderground and surface mine workers. The effects of a personality variable and a cognitive factor on anxiety were searched. Some social and demographic characteristics of these coal miners were also investigated. Four different measurement instruments were used; the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, Perceived Danger Scale and a Questionnaire. The results showed that the anxiety level of the subjects could be discriminated significantly by the three independent variables of location (surface versus underground), perceived danger, and internal-external control, in that order. Underground miners were found to have higher anxiety, to perceive higher danger and to be more external than surface miners. That is, the physical conditions of the workplace and the degree of danger perceived by miners were the best predictors of anxiety states, whereas the personality factor (internal-external locus of control) was not such an important predi£tor of anxiety states. These results were discussed in the light of our theoretical expectations and in view of stress theories. The results of the study supported Lazarus's stress model in general. They also showed that underground mine work was a highly stressful occupational field and should be given serious attention.Item The hospitalization experience and state-trait anxiety among different diagnostic groups(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 1982., 1982.) Mizrahi, Coya.; Fişek, Güler Okman. This study investigated the state-trait anxiety levels of psychiatric inpatients in relation to the concept of hosnitalization 60 subjects; 20 neurotics, 20 psychotics and 20 substance abusers were given The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory at the time shortly after hospitalization and at the time before discharge from the hospital. The subjects were inpatients from Erenkoy Social Security Assosiation Psychiatric Hospital and were between 25 to 45 years old. The subjects had at least elementary school education. The first group of hypotheses was about the differences between neurotics and psychotics."The hypotheses stated that neuroti will have higher state and trait anxiety levels both at the time shortly after hosptalization and before discharge from the hopital. The second group of hypotheses was about the differences within subjects, that is about the change between evaluations shortly after hospitalization and before discharge from the hospital of the same subjects. The hypotheses stated that neurotics will have lower and psychotics higher state anxiety scores before discharge from the hospital while trait anxiety scores of both groups were expected to remain st8,ble. Findings about the case of substance abusers were presented altough there was no hypoothesis stated about their condition. The most general finding was that all of the three groups showed a decrease in their anxiety levels and this decrease was most significant in the neurotic group, reflected both in state and trait anxiety scores. The other important finding was that neurotic and psychotic subjects could be differentiated according to their state and trait hospital did not indicate any difference between these two groups of subjects. The results were discussed in the light of our theoretical expectations and in terms of the hospitalization experience.
