Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2021., 2021.) Odunkıran, Fatma Süheda.; Taşkın, Gülşah.The subject of this thesis is Mevlid-i Şerîf, by Mustafa Selâmî, who lived in the 16th century. Mevlid-i Şerîf, which there are discussions about the writer of, has only one manuscript and it has been attributed to one of the 19th-century poets İzmirli Mustafa Selâmî by some researchers; but in this research, it is given some hard evidences which show that the work more likely belongs to İznikli Şeyh Mustafa Selâmî. Although there is not much data about Mustafa Selâmî, all the available information about his life and works has been compiled, and an investigation of his works that had not been found yet has also been included in this thesis. Furthermore; the origin of the genre, its development, and the works from this mevlid genre written in Anatolia have been examined by scanning mevlid literature. Also, the relations of Mustafa Selâmî’s Mevlid-i Şerîf with Vesîletü’n-Necât and Muhammediye has been investigated by giving examples from those works comparatively. Then the only manuscript has been transcripted, intralingual translation1 has been made and its form and content have been reviewed. The thesis has consisted of “Mustafa Selâmî’s Life and Works,” “The Analysis of Mevlid-i Şerîf,” “The relations of Mevlid-i Şerîf with Vesîletü’n-Necât and Muhammediye,” “Conclusion,” and “Transcripted and Intralingual Translation of Mevlid-i Şerîf” chapters and the facsimile has also been given in Appendix B.Item A mysterious Ottoman narration :|Hagop Haciyan’s Kış Geceleri as a 19th century adventure novel(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2021., 2021.) Çelik, Azra.; Köroğlu, Erol. This thesis examines Agop Haciyan's Kış Geceleri as an example of an adventure novel sub-genre classified as a popular novel genre. Written in the 19th century Ottoman Empire, the work was originally written in Armenian under the name of "Pera Geceleri" and then transferred to Turkish with some changes and became popular enough to make three editions in its period. The text, which is about the adventures of the Armenians in the Beyoğlu region, is generically related to the Paris Mystery text. Continuing the "mysterious revenge adventures" genre, of which Paris Mystery is the founding text, Kış Geceleri has created a variation in this genre in the context of Ottoman literature. When we look at the common features of mysterious vengeance adventures, the text mostly walks in the heart of a city with the emergence of a situation to take revenge due to a crime and the deterioration of the existing order, ending with the restoration of justice. At the end of the adventure, the super strong heroes restore order by applying justice in their way, and take revenge on the weak, and close the text. However, the text of Kış Geceleri ends with the inability to take revenge, the victims of the text turn into madness, and the establishment of justice by the state, which cannot be established by the heroes. In this way, the text creates a kind of deviation.Item A queer deviance in Turkish detective fiction:|The Hop-Çiki-Yaya series by Mehmet Murat Somer(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2019., 2019.) Yüce, Cüneyt.; Akyıldız, Olcay.Detective fiction has often been labeled as the “stepchild of literature” or “cheap literature” by literary critics and it also has been looked down on by being considered as an “escapist fiction”. However, funnily enough, it is one of the most strictly prescribed genres of literature. As it has usually been stated, detective fiction, which is one of the entertainment tools of modern mass society, provides readers to be a part of conformity. And this conformity is based on white middle-class men’s morals. In this study, detective fiction genre, which takes its shape around masculinist conventions, is analyzed around institution and class-implying concepts such as genre and gender. In order to analyze these concepts, Mehmet Murat Somer’s Hop-Çiki-Yaya series, of which protagonist is a transvestite, has been chosen as primary fictional texts. Here, it is advocated that, our perception of gender and genre has been built through some certain repetitions; therefore, based on Judith Butler’s conceptualization, these two concepts are presented as performative and fluid becomings. On the other hand, it has been shown that, both the series and its protagonist are ultimately parts of certain borders. Not only queer notions and their intersections with detective fiction genre but also all of their reflections in Somer’s series have been chosen as the focal point of this research.Item A response to the demand for modern narrative:|Sergüzeşt-i Kalyopi(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2019., 2019.) Doğan, Abdullah.; Öztürk, Veysel.T. Abdi is an important author who published four novels between 1873 and 1875 that are the date of appearing of Ottoman novels. There is no accurate information about who is T. Abdi in history of literature. There were few studies about this important author and his works. Sergüzeşt-i Kalyopi, which is best-known work of him, is an attempt to transcribe a story from oral culture. When T. Abdi wrote a traditional story, he gave the reason of the plot and created a character (even it is primitive). It is seen in his prefaces of novels, translated novels became popular and a demand occurred for modern narration. It was noticeable that T. Abdi satisfies this demand with telling a story from tradition, at the same time using modern narration. T. Abdi also has distinctive features. Unlike the other authors in his era, he used a female protagonist in his novel. Despite these interesting features, T. Abdi was not included in Turkish literary canon. The research which has been done until this time aims to determine Sergüzeşt-i Kalyopi’s role in the tradition. The primary purpose of this study is about how to Sergüzeşt-i Kalyopi transforms this tradition.Item A sufistic compilation with OE_YZ_0333 item number at Atatürk Library of İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (Analysis – Transcription & MESTAP Classification)(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2022., 2022.) Sevim, Sezen.; Gençtürk Demircioğlu, Tülay. The topic of this thesis a sufistic compilation with OE_YZ_0333 item number which we have taken from the Atatürk Library of İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The fundamental aim of this research is to create the most accurate transcription of the Compilation by comparing the poems which are in the text with the other versions of them. Also, we tried to detect the identities of the poets whose poetries are included in the Compilation and to reveal some information about the poems such as a meter or missing/ extra verse units of the poetries. The other purpose of this study is to find out why this Compilation was created and how it was consumed. The Compilation which is consist of a wide variety of poetries was not compiled by different assemblers because the style of handwriting which was used in the whole text was never changed. It shows that this Compilation is a private compilation and it reveals some causes of the creation process and the consumption methods of the Compilation. Correspondingly, the Compilation has been studied from the point of literary tendencies which were internalized by the poets. Therefore, we studied the whole manuscript by searching for the reasons for production with the following footprints in the text and lives of the poets. Then we create a classification of the Compilation according to MESTAP project (Systematic Classification Project of Compilations). Finally, the significance of this thesis is that it purposes to reach the information of production and consumption process of the Compilation by overreaching that doing just transcription of the text.Item A textual analysis of Hasan Kenzi’s divan and the vezin–usul relationship in his musicalized poems(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2016., 2016.) Küçükçalık, Bedia.; Gençtürk Demircioğlu, Tülay. The purpose of this study is to present the divan (collected poems) of Hasan Kenzi, a Sufi poet and musician who lived in the eighteenth century. In addition to a textual analysis, information about his life, works and his literary understanding are given in the thesis. After that, Hasan Kenzi’s divan was examined in the context of its religious and mystical elements. Another issue addressed in this thesis is the relevance of vezin (meter) and usul (tempo) in the musicalized poems of Hasan Kenzi. In the first part of the study, a textual analysis was done according to the single copy of the divan and poems that are not in the divan but which are compiled from various sources, with mecmuas (poetry magazine) appended at the end of the transcribed text. Information about his works and musician identity is given, based on the poet’s vakfiye (deed of trust of a pious foundation) records, which were found in Manisa, and tezkires (collection of biographies). To study the divan in terms of form and content, rhythm and rhyme features were first explored, after which religious and mystical elements in the poems were described. In the second part of the study, information is provided on Turkish religious music and general developments in this field in the eighteenth century. Subsequently, the relationship of vezin and usul, was evaluated from different perspectives as reported by various researchers. Finally, the reasons for using certain usuls to musicalize poems written with certain aruz (prosody) meters have been investigated.Item A transcription and examination of the Millet Manuscript Library’s Mecmu’a-ı Eş’ar ve Gazeliyyat number Aemnz587(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2016., 2016.) Güler, Gökhan.; Gençtürk Demircioğlu, Tülay. There are some works in Ottoman poetry those have only very little information about themselves (such as the compositor, the year of composition, copy-record) but when we examine them, the works themselves still provide considerable information about their era. Poetry compilation books are usually called mecmu’a-i eş’ar, mecmu’atü’l-eş’ar (a compilation of poems) and totally reflect their compositors’ taste in poems. These works include the popular poets of their era as well as the forgotten ones of today. Furthermore, the compilations of poems are important not only because they reflect the taste in poems of their compositors, but also the taste of the poems of their era. From this perspective, I firmly believe that examining the compilation of poems that recorded in the Millet Manuscript Library numbered Aemnz587 is a milestone in comprehending the taste of poems of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.Item A transcription and textual analysis of Medhiye-i Ali Paşa ve Gencîne-i Pür-Temâşâ(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2016., 2016.) Bursalı, Meryem.; Sabuncu, Zeynep. The subject of this thesis is Medhiye-i Ali Paşa ve Gencîne-i Pür-Temâşâ, written by Şâzî in 1619 to praise Sultan Osman’s grand vizier Ali Pasha, who is known as İstanköylü, Çelebi and Güzelce. Şâzî’s work contains literary prose style (inşâ) and poems in praise of Ali Pasha and his valor and a story about a sultan and his grand vizier. This work is divided into three chapters. The first chapter, which contains the remarks of contemporary researchers about the seventeenth century and its changing power centres, examines Şâzî and Ali Pasha’s life. The second chapter, which focuses on Şâzî’s text, examines his prose style and aims to show that Şâzî wanted to make a difference in literature and thus hoped to find a patron, Ali Pasha, to support him. Quotations from Hüsn ü Dil written by Âhî ve Lâmi‘î are also examined in this chapter. Describing the method of textual analysis and transcription system as well as giving information about manuscript, the third and final chapter concludes with a transcription of the text.Item A transcription and textual analysis of Mehmed Memduh Pasha’s Eser-i Memdûh as a comparison of pen and sword(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2021., 2021.) Şahin, Muhammed.; Büyükkarcı Yılmaz, Fatma. This study consists of a transcription of the Eser-i Memdûh written in the nineteenth century by Mehmed Memduh Pasha, and includes research on both the text and its writer. Eser-i Memdûh, which consists of forty five pages, is a prose work that was written in the “inşa” style, and includes verse parts. Its subject regards the comparison between pen and sword. The text has been examined with regard to style and content and it is aimed to make it accessible by transcription. The first chapter introduces the author, Mehmed Memduh Pasha, and explains the relationship of Eser-i Memdûh with the genre of debate. The second chapter discusses the development of pen and sword narratives and clarifies the characteristics of the “inşa” style and the effect of Encümen-i Şuarâ, of which the author was a member, by means of the text. The third chapter states the method in the preparation of the text, transcription system and concludes with a transcription of the text. This study is significant in terms of transferring Eser-i Memdûh, which stands out with its language features and wording peculiar to the seventeenth century, although it was written in the nineteenth century, to the Latin alphabet for the first time, and a contribution to the Encümen-i Şuarâ studies.Item A transcription and textual analysis of Münazara-i Tuti vü Zağ Tercemesi(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2016., 2016.) Arslan, Serap.; Sabuncu, Zeynep. This study consists of a transcription of the Münazara-i Tuti vü Zağ Tercemesi, which was written by Şerif Efendi in the sixteenth century, and includes research on both the text and its writer. The work was translated into Turkish from Persian, using the inşa style at the request of Sultan Mehmed III. A discussion of superiority between a parrot and a crow, it is a religious and moral narration called münazara. The text is analyzed in terms of its content and form and then the manuscript of the text is transcribed from Ottoman Turkish to Turkish. The first chapter introduces the author, Şerif Efendi, and positions the text of Münazara-i Tuti vü Zağ Tercemesi in the münazara genre. The second chapter clarifies the origin of the story of the parrot and the crow and discusses the characteristics of the inşa style through the text. In addition, relationships among three different parrot-crow stories (the Persian Mübahase-i Tuti ba-Zağ, Nev‘i’s Münazara-i Tuti vü Zağ, and Şerif Efendi’s text) were examined. It is claimed that Şerif Efendi’s text was originally a translation of the Persian Mübahase-i Tuti ba- Zağ. The third chapter describes the method of textual analysis, the transcription system and concludes with a transcription of the text.Item A virus could become a virus’: The body and the world in Buzul Çağının Virüsü(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2016., 2016.) Şen, Münire Sevgi.; Uysal, Zeynep. In this thesis, I will argue how the sensation mechanisms in Vüs’at O. Bener’s novel Buzul Çağının Virüsü connect itself to the modernist literature tradition. To explain all these issues, I will discuss how the construction of time and narrative techniques create the world of the novel, and through all these, I will show through which parameters the subject who is in this world/ who is with this world / who has to live in this world shapes itself through all those parameters. During all these processes, I will describe the world limited/ opened through the gaze of the protagonist Osman, who is stuck in triangle of death-life-play.Item Ahmed Bin Hüseyin El-Giridî's Risâletü'l-Kavsiye :|a transcription and textual analysis(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2019., 2019.) Erçin, Zekiye Şeyma.; Gençtürk Demircioğlu, Tülay. The subject of this thesis is Risâletü’l Kavsiye which consists of thirty-eight leafs written by Ahmed Al-Giridî as prose in the eighteenth century. The aim of the study is to make the work accessible by transcription, to examine the text in terms of content and form and to give information about the author. In accordance with this purpose, a transcribed text was created based on the single copy of the work. This study consists of five main chapters. In the introductory chapter, information about Turkish archery and archery texts is given. Afterwards, the life and works of the author are briefly mentioned from the accessed sources and information in the work we have examined. In the third chapter, the content features of the work are included. By giving general information about the work, the six parts that make up the text were examined. Then, the work is examined in terms of language and spelling and the obtained data are tried to be shown with examples from the text. In addition, the rhyme in the prose belonging to the introductory chapter of the work is shown. In the last chapter, the method in the preparation of the text is stated and the transcribed text of the work is given. A facsimile copy of the work is added to the end. The importance of this study is to reveal the literary characteristics of Risâletü’l Kavsiye, which is a useful resource for researchers with its unique features and style in terms of language and spelling, rather than transcription.Item Alienation of the individual in Dar Zamanlar by Adalet Ağaoğlu(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2009., 2009.) Şenol, Derya.; Kara, Halim. The thesis examines the alienation of the individual in Adalet Adaoğlu’s trilogy Dar Zamanlar, composed of Ölmeye Yatmak, Bir Düğün Gecesi and Hayır... respectively. Narrating the significant political developments and swift transformation processes that have occurred in Turkish society from the 1930s to the 1980s, this study focuses fundamentally on the alienation of Aysel, the main character of the trilogy. It also looks at the manifestation of the alienation experience and the way it is narrated in these novels. The thesis argues that there are some differences in the way the individual’s alienation is experienced in each novel of the trilogy, depending on their time of writing and the narrated time of the novels. It also shows that Aysel’s struggle, as one of the first representatives of women and of the enlightened generation of the Turkish nation, with the Kemalist ideology gradually drags her into alienation in Ölmeye Yatmak; then, in Bir Düğün Gecesi, the feeling of alienation which is triggered by the official ideology is transformed into the destiny of not only Aysel but also the “modern” individual; finally, in Hayır…, alienation is described as an existential problem of the fragmented individual.Item An analysis of Mai ve Siyah as a serial illustrated novel in the Servet-i Fünun journal(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2016., 2016.) Selimoğlu, Yağmur Başak.; Uysal, Zeynep. In this study, I discuss the visual innovations along with the progress of visuality on the basis of individual perspective and realist fiction’s focus on the individual’s visuality. Then I detail visuality’s and realist fiction’s individual approach considering the depictions in Mai ve Siyah such as hybrid ones that are in-between photograph and painting and expressionist ones shaped by the visions of the main character, Ahmet Cemil, along with a general understanding of the function depictions in the Servet-i Fünun journal. I also pay attention to how these depictions take place in Mai ve Siyah’s illustrations and relate these illustrations to realist fiction’s focus on the individual. In this context, since the artist’s style complexifies the illustrations, I consider Tiran Chrakian’s understanding of art, as well. (See Appendix A for an extended abstract.)Item An analysis towards the Ghazals of Yaşar Nezihe(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2009., 2009.) Çetin, Hande.; Toska, Zehra. This dissertation study is about the poems in ghazal form by Yaşar Nezihe included in her books entitled with Bir Deste Menekşe and Feryadlarım. It is targeted to reveal connections of odes written in 19th century when Divan literature tradition was not commonly followed with traditions of the periods in which it was strictly regarded. In this context, the study focuses on styles, themes and motifs of ghazals and bases Yaşar Nezihe's relation with tradition in terms of similarities qnd differences. It is asserted that this female poet who was unable to get a good education but created a tremendous impression with her poems published in the journals and books in her lifetime attained different ways of expression both being in compliance with the rules of Divan poetry and sometimes breaking the rules slightly.Item An ekphrastic view of history through paintings in İlhan Berk’s poems(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2023., 2023) Kokoz Pazar, Sena.; Akyıldız, Olcay. This thesis examines how the ekphrastic poems written by İlhan Berk about visual artworks offer a perspective on history. The first chapter examines the relationship between visual arts and poetry from the past to the present. It then summarizes the changing nature of historiography over time and the emergence of postmodern historiography. The second chapter focuses on the transformation İlhan Berk undergoes in his poetry, particularly in his book Galile Denizi. It delves into how the resulting ekphrastic poems establish a connection with history. The third chapter examines the visual background of the mythology and history-focused poems found in the books Çivi Yazısı, Otağ, and Mısırkalyoniğne. These visual backgrounds can be traced through the Kült Kitap and the notebooks kept by İlhan Berk. The fourth chapter demonstrates how the ekphrastic poems in the poetry book Şenliknâme reflect the poet's focus on Ottoman history during this period. The fifth chapter highlights how the book Atlas intensifies the interest in both the history of cities and individuals. This chapter also showcases how Atlas represents İlhan Berk's own history through paintings and poetry. In the final chapter of the thesis, the discussion revolves around how approaching history through an ekphrastic perspective using visual artworks establishes a relationship between the poet and history. As a result, it becomes evident that İlhan Berk utilizes visual artworks as a means to act as he desires within history, to disrupt and recreate history, and to establish his own narrative of history.Item An Ottoman miscellany compiled in the eighteenth century (Textual analysis, transcription and comparative text)(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2019., 2019.) Esen, Abdullah.; Gençtürk Demircioğlu, Tülay. The Ottoman miscellany examined in this thesis was borrowed from Prof. Ismail Erunsal’s personal collection. The first goal of this study was to make the Miscellany accessible to researchers by transcribing the text after comparing it with the former (un)published texts pertaining to classical Turkish literature. An additional goal was to determine why these texts were compiled in this Miscellany. I reached the conclusion that it was compiled by different compilers in a long process, updating current suggestions about reasons for producing miscellanies and about ways of consumption. It has also shown that the miscellanies can be regarded and analyzed as collective works. Accordingly, the texts in verse in the Miscellany were studied in terms of the literary styles adopted by the poets in the Miscellany. The fact that the poems belonging to the philosophical style in classical Turkish literature were relatively more numerous than the others, along with the fact that the texts in prose had short notes by the compilers, demonstrates that the compilers of the Miscellany were followers of the philosophical style. The texts written in prose have been separately studied and analyzed in terms of the reasons for the miscellanies’ production reasons and their ways of consumption. This thesis is important in that it shows why a variety of texts were collected in a manuscript, going beyond the transcription of miscellanies, which is the general tendency of researchers in similar subjects.Item Anonymous Sûrnâme about the wedding ceremony of Mihrimah Sultan in 1836 :|an analysis and transcription(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2022., 2022.) Yıldız, Yavuz Selim.; Büyükkarcı Yılmaz, Fatma. This thesis focuses on the anonymous Sûrnâme, which was written about the wedding and festival organized on the occasion of the marriage of Mihrimah Sultan, daughter of Mahmud II, to Mehmed Said Pasha in 1836. The starting point of this thesis is that this work is the only one that has not been translated among the nineteen works found in the surname field. Therefore, the main purpose of this thesis is to reveal the transliterated text of the work and to problematize the relationship between them by comparing it with the other work Sûrnâme-i Lebîb, which tells about the marriage wedding. Accordingly, in the first part of the study, information about the type of surname and the works produced in this field are presented. In the second part, while focusing on the content of the anonymous Sûrnâme, which constitutes the main subject of this study, on the other hand, ideas about the stylistic features of the work are suggested. When it comes to the third part, two works written about the same ceremony, Sûrnâme whose author is unknown and Sûrnâme-i Lebîb are examined in a comparative way and the similarity relationship between them is questioned. In the fourth chapter, along with the presentation of the copy of the anonymous work, the methods followed in determining the text are listed and the transcription text is revealed after the transcription alphabet is given. The fifth chapter consists of the conclusion part, in which the thesis study is summarized in general terms.
