Item 16. yüzyılda bir nazire şairi Sebzi ve nazireleri(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institue of Social Sciences, 2001., 2001.) Karataş, İbrahim Hakan.Item A "democratic realist" foreign policy: U.S. democracy promotion in the Middle East and the case of Egypt(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2007., 2007.) Yaylacı, İsmail.; Eder, Mine,This thesis analyzes the vision that governs U.S. democracy promotion policy in the Middle East that has been put into practice after September 11 in the particular case of Egypt. The thesis argues that U.S. democracy promotion policy has been theorized and implemented through a neoconservative ‘democratic realist’ foreign policy approach which aims at consolidating authoritarian cooperative regimes through empowering the already excessively powerful executives while opening a limited space for political opposition. In other words the thesis argues that the neoconservative ‘democratic realist’ frameworks for U.S. foreign policy envision a ‘liberal autocratic’ model in their democracy promotion policies in the Middle East whereby the existing authoritarian allies manage, rather than negate, pluralism through institutional and legal engineering and coercion which aims at consolidating authoritarianisms instead of democratization of the Middle East polities. The thesis investigates the IR theoretical repercussions of this neoconservative ‘democratic realist’ foreign policy approach. It argues that constructivist reading provide us with substantial analytical tools in order to go beyond the orthodox theoretical dichotomy of realism and liberalism to see how neoconservative thinkers create a blend of realist and liberal frameworks in their approach to U.S. democracy promotion in the Middle East. The thesis also analyzes the criticisms of radical/critical IR theories about the nature of democracy that is on the democracy promotion agenda.Item A 360° customer lifetime value prediction method using machine learning for multi category e-commerce companies(Thesis (Ph.D.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2023., 2023) Yılmaz, Gülşah.; Badur, Bertan Yılmaz.; Mardikyan, Sona Kunuzyan. The Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) prediction methods that are used by e-commerce companies are mainly focusing on a specific group of customers with multiple transaction data and therefore remain unable to value the one-time purchasers. As a result, the management of these companies is incapable of valuing all customers and the overall company. Thus, each type of user needs a different way to predict CLV. In this thesis, we intend to develop a novel 360° holistic technique for the prediction and use of CLV models in the marketing management of multi-category e-commerce companies to enhance their strategic decision-making. The research compared the proposed framework which was constructed with several outputs (CLV, DPC, and TAS) with other ML models to evaluate the new variables created based on relationship marketing theory (RMT) and to demonstrate the best model which is more appropriate for multi category e-commerce companies' usage. To make this result useful, we created customer clusters that enable management to separate end-users according to the three outputs. Finally, Shapley values obtained using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) are then utilized to understand the DNN's findings. The results showed that using XAI shows which factors are more crucial to the results. Overall, the proposed model helps marketing management teams in planning their operations efficiently by differentially allocating their resources to specific types of customers based on their profitability which provides more strategic decision-making.Item A career decision-making program for lycée students(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 1983., 1983.) İncesulu, Ayşim.; Öner, Necla.A career decision-making program! based on Jackson-Egner's (1978) career decision making model, was adapted to provide a counseling intervention in facilitating students' career maturity development. The Career Maturity Inventory originated by Crites (1978) was also translated and adapted to be used as a supplementary source in facilitating the program. The program was administered to 46 ninth grade students in a ,private lycee. There were 24 male, 22 female students all around the age of fifteen years old. Students ' informal evaluations were derived through a questionnaire and oral reports. Feedback obtained from the questionnaire and oral reports indicated that the students generally found the Career Decision Making Program quite beneficial. They indicated that they were interested in and made use of the occupational information given. Exploring their interest areas as well as alternative solutions offered in case of a problem like failing at university enterance exams were found very useful and encouraging. Impressionistic evidence accumulated in this project raised the question about the feasibility of Super's Developmental Self Concept Theory of Vocational Behavior for students in Turkey. Values, expactations and opportunities this theory assumes are different from those that exist in Turkey. Limitations based on such theoretical assumptions and practical applications in career choice in Turkey, and recommendations to develop a more applicable Career Decision Making Program for Turkish students than the one attempted here were discussed.Item A case study in an early childhood setting: science teaching practices and teacher perspectives(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2014., 2014.) Çeviren, Ayşe Büşra.; Güven, Devrim. The purpose of this study was to describe science teaching practices and teacher’s perspective on science education in an early childhood classroom and draw a picture of early childhood teachers’ perspectives and practices at the setting on science education through a holistic view. Considering the purpose of the study descriptive case study method was employed in the study. Data were collected through lengthy observations at the early childhood classroom, which consisted of four years old children, and in-depth interviews done with seven early childhood teachers, who had experiences with four or five years old children. The data collected through observations, informal and semi-structured interviews, documents and field notes were coded in MAXQDA 11 and the themes of the study were constructed under two main themes: teacher practices and teacher perspectives. Practices of the teachers revealed that although engagement and conclusion periods of science activities were performed through active involvement of children, implementation periods involved considerable amount of teacher control. Demonstrations, explanations, authoritative question-answer session and video presentations were found to be the predominant strategies that result in teacher control. Perspectives of teachers revealed three possible considerations for this situation: lack of understanding on science education; lack of understanding on importance and goals of science education; and lack of content knowledge on science. Moreover, considerations of teachers for qualified science practices were found as being well prepared, providing science rich environments, teachers’ attitude towards science, and having children enjoy. Finally, suggestions for pre-service and in-service teacher training programs were given.Item A case study of a Turkish English learner in an EFL setting: investment, imagined community, and identity(Thesis (Ph.D.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2014., 2014.) Ersin, Pınar.; Bayyurt, Yasemin.; Nelson, Gayle,The present study investigates the learner identity construction of one particular learner. More specifically, the study aims to examine the relationship between a learner‟s English language learning and her learner identity. The key participant was a 19-year-old learner, Gamze (pseudonym), enrolled in a one-year intensive English language program at a state university in Istanbul, Turkey. Qualitative data sources for this single case study were interviews with the key participant, interviews with the key participant‟s instructors, the key participant‟s language journal, video recordings of the key participant‟s classes, stimulated recall protocols with the key participant and researcher journal. Thematic analysis was applied to the data in order to categorize emerging themes. The analysis revealed that initially the key participant seemed to invest in English language practice in and outside the classroom to become a member of her imagined community. However, her investment appeared to decrease gradually, throughout the semester. Thus, her decreased investment seemed to be reflected in her shifting learner identity construction. In conclusion, Gamze seemed to improve less and slower in the class because there were multiple reasons that kept her from investing enough, which influenced her learner identity along her language learning journey.Item A Case study on the current state of in-service training in a public school based on teachers' and administrators' evaluation(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2010., 2010.) Ala, Hüseyin.; Gök, Fatma. This case study examines the current state of in-service training activities in a public school based on teachers’ and administrators’ evaluation. It is a qualitative analysis addressing three categories of questions which relate to the current state of in-service training activities in a public school along with teachers’ and administrators’ evaluation of in-service training activities provided by the Ministry of National Education. The participants of the study are the teachers and administrators of a public elementary school situated in a low income, high migration area in Ümraniye, Istanbul. Regarding the data collection, in the first phase, there was an analysis of documentation and an interview with the assistant manager responsible for the implementation of in-service trainings was performed to understand the current situation of in-service training activities in the school. In the second phase of the study, semi-structured interviews were applied according to the Teachers’/Administrators’ Evaluation of In-Service Training: Semi Structured Interview Form. The findings indicated that the school where this research was performed had brought about a general perspective on the current instances of in-service training and opened new matters of discussion related to the design of in-service training practices. There appear significant problems regarding teachers’ and administrators’ approaches toward in-service training, trainers, time, place, prior analysis of needs and trainings on technology.Item A case study on the development of Turkish pre-service EFL teachers’ digital competence(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2022., 2022.) Canbulat, Gizem.; Yıldız, Senem. The present qualitative case study aims to explore the impact of a technology enhanced language teaching course on pre-service EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers’ digital competence development from the perspective of the Digital Competence Framework for Educators (DigCompEdu). The participants were six pre-service EFL teachers at a state university in Turkey. The data collected during the course was enriched with data collected during participants’ teaching practicum to fill the gap in the literature. The research questions aimed to explore (1) the participants’ perceived digital competence before and after the study, the DigCompEdu areas where the participants made the most and least progress during the course, (2) whether and how the participants’ digital competence developed in practice, (3) whether and how the participants planned to benefit from their digital competence training in the future, (4) whether and how the participants could transfer their digital competence to teaching practicum and their reflections on using technology in macro teachings. Data were gathered through surveys, interviews, reflection papers, and performance tasks. The findings revealed that the participants’ perceived competence increased after the study, and they planned to reflect their competence to their future teachings. It was also found that the development of digital competence is a complex process affected by several factors, and the participants could not transfer their digital competence to their performance tasks during coursework and practicum in the same way.Item A cash-for-care scheme targeting children with disabilities in Turkey: Parent / caregiver perspectives(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2018., 2018.) Avşaroğlu, Nazlı.; Yılmaz, Volkan.A cash-for-care scheme targeting mainly families with at least one disabled member has become the central policy response to the care needs of persons with disabilities in Turkey’s welfare regime. This thesis explores how beneficiaries perceive this program by focusing specifically on caregivers of children with disabilities. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 caregivers of children with disabilities—four primary caregivers who have been receiving cash-for-care at the time of the research and four primary caregivers who have lost their benefits—in Istanbul’s Atasehir and Sultangazi districts between February and May 2016. The research reveals that although cash-for-care scheme has been widely welcomed by the informal caregivers, it has been perceived by the caregivers as a symbolic financial aid instead of a wage in exchange for their informal care work. In addition, cash-for-care beneficiaries that were included in this study perceive this scheme primarily as a financial support for poverty alleviation rather than a cash benefit in order to meet the special needs of their children with disabilities. While the introduction of a targeted cash-for-care allowance has signified an extension of state responsibility in social care, this thesis concludes that the program functions not as a care support scheme but as a social assistance scheme for the very poor.Item A changing sense of self in the context of coercive control(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2015., 2014.) Ülkümen, Aylin Deniz.; Müderrisoğlu, Serra. The present study aimed to gain an insight into how women's sense of self change in the context of coercive control. Building on the previous literature of complex trauma, it pursued an understanding of how male violence is gradually structured in marriage, how women experience, react to, and cope up with such violence, and how their experiences and definitions of self are transformed throughout this processes. A qualitative methodology was used and in-depth interviews were conducted with nine women with histories of intimate partner violence, who had ended their relationships and were in therapy. The interviews were analyzed using grounded theory. It appeared that the participant women experienced marriage as a period of intense loneliness and enstrangement, with no space provided to exercise agency, and confronting repetitive rejections of their expectations of intimacy and closeness with their husbands. The partner, in overt or covert fashion, made the women feel incapable, useless, ignorant, as lacking of necessary resources, and unable to do things on their own, even unable to judge right from wrong on their own. Such a sense of self seemed to lead to both shame and guilt, in that feelings of shame was induced by perceiving self as defected, and feelings of guilt arose from perceiving self as leading the husband to inflict violence. The changes in the sense ofselfofthe women during marriage could be conceptualized as falling into one broad category of shame and doubt: doubt regarding one's own worth; doubt regarding one's strength, accomplishments and independence; and doubt regarding one's decency and competency. iiiItem A collective case study to understand the whys and wherefores of not using technology in mathematics education(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2014., 2014.) Eren, Mehmet.; Özel, Serkan. The purpose of this study was to investigate the barriers of technology integration in primary mathematics education. To determine the barriers, three different themes were used: (a) teachers’ definition of self in integration efforts, (b) the relationship between technology and pedagogy in teachers’ perspectives, and (c) teachers’ understanding of the nature of technology in today’s world. Convenience sampling method was used to select six primary mathematics teachers. A multiple case study design consisting of six distinct cases was used as the methodology. An adapted semi-structured interview was used as the instrument. To make comparisons within and across cases, results were stated under two main headings: Within case analysis and cross case analysis. The data, first of all, revealed that the access barrier to the available sources is prominent in all cases. Secondly, considering pedagogical concerns, the motivation of the students and the pace of the lessons are the points on which technology integration has the greatest impact. Professional development was another barrier participants had a consensus on. In this respect, the participants proposed a ten-stage plan to educate teachers in terms of technology integration. Lastly, but most importantly, it was proposed that technology itself in today’s world can appear as the next barrier.Item A comparative analysis of corporate social responsibility practices of Turkish companies and companies with foreign ownership(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2012., 2012.) Bilgehan, Meltem.; Selekler Gökşen, Nisan.; Ökten, Özlem Yıldırım.The concept Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been very popular both in the academia and business world especially in the recent fifty years. Supranational and non-governmental organizations, governments, business world and scholars strive for promoting CSR. The main objective of this study is to investigate the CSR practices of listed companies with a special emphasis on the differences between CSR practices of Turkish companies and companies with foreign ownership. Shareholder theory, stakeholder theory and institutional theory establish the theoretical framework of the study. For this aim, CSR practices of companies listed in the Istanbul Stock Exchange National 100 Index as of the last quarter of year 2009 is analyzed. The data were collected from archival sources such as annual reports, corporate governance compliance reports, and official web sites. Content analysis method is used for the analysis. Activities carried out by companies beyond ethical and legal obligations were regarded as CSR and every activity is coded as a project. These projects are investigated based on various dimensions namely subject area, target, scope, partners, level of engagement and time span. Findings reveal that there are significant differences between CSR practices of companies. This difference can be observed both among the Turkish companies, and between Turkish companies and companies with foreign ownership. Especially, scopes of the projects, engagement levels of companies in the projects and types of partnerships while carrying out the projects substantially differ between Turkish companies and companies with foreign ownership.Item A comparative analysis of employee and organization perspectives about “Bring Your Own Device” policies(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2017., 2016.) Gökce, Kevser Gülnur.; Döğerlioğlu, Özgür.Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), which allows employees to use their own mobile devices for work and connect to the corporate network, has getting more popular in many enterprises. Companies want to increase the efficiency and productivity of employees with decreasing the cost while employees prefer to use their own device in the work because they feel more comfortable and it eases the communication. BYOD has some advantages and disadvantages for both companies and employees. Organizations should think all of the effects of BYOD on their system and working environment. Although BYOD seems very attractive, companies and employees have some security concerns in different and various ways. The aim of this study is to explore employee and organization perspectives about BYOD. In this study, literature has been reviewed in order to develop a research model. Empirical part of the research has two parts: Qualitative and Quantitative. Manager’s opinions were determined through a series of interviews and then the findings were analyzed. In qualitative part, a questionnaire has been developed based on the research model. The English and Turkish versions of the questionnaire are in Appendix B and C, respectively.12 different interviews and 93 respondents were used in the analysis. It has been found that while organizations and employees believe BYOD having benefits in many ways, they also support the idea that security and privacy issues should not be ignored.Item A comparative analysis of financial regulation reforms in Turkey and Poland : evidence from the 2000s(Thesis (Ph.D.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2023., 2023) Çetinkaya, Murat.; Kadirbeyoğlu, Zeynep. This thesis focuses on identifying the determinants of financial regulation reforms. It investigates the reasons behind the introduction of or changes to financial regulations by governments and other regulators, with specific reference to the financial regulations undertaken by Turkey and Poland in the 2000s. The research question is explored from a comparative political economy perspective, and the answer is arrived at by employing the most similar systems design method using two cases. This limited number facilitated an in-depth comparative analysis. The determinants that I hypothesized would have an effect on financial regulations were domestic learning, policy diffusion, global shocks, local shocks, financial development, and trade development. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to investigate the effects of these factors. The results are largely compatible with each other. The findings in this thesis provide evidence that these variables are effective in financial regulation reforms, but there are significant differences in the direction of their effects. One significant difference is observed in the learning factor. Both exogenous (policy diffusion) and endogenous (domestic learning) types of learning turned out to have a negative effect on the pace of financial liberalization reforms in Turkey and Poland. The thesis finds that this difference is primarily the result of the rise in state intervention in response to financial crises that triggered concerns about financial stability. The findings further suggest that the effects of these factors vary across critical junctures and spatial and temporal dimensions.Item A comparative analysis of noticing of mathematics teachers with varying teaching experience(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2014., 2014.) Erdik, Evrim.; Ader, Engin.Teachers’ noticing refers to attending to classroom events and interpreting why those events are worth noticing. Noticing is regarded as an essential component of teaching expertise. The purpose of present study is to investigate what mathematics teachers with different years of experience notice, and differences and similarities between the teachers in terms of noticing. 15 participant mathematics teachers were purposefully selected and divided into three groups as, inexperienced, less experienced and experienced teachers, according to their teaching experience. Quantitative and qualitative tools were used to analyze the data. Chi square tests were conducted to examine whether noticing of teachers with varying teaching experience significantly differed from each other. A coding schema which assigned actor, topic, stance and specificity to a specific event was used. Results showed that there were statistically significant differences between teacher groups in terms of their noticing about the actor and topic of the noticed incident and the stance they adopted. Statistically significant differences were especially between the experienced teachers and the inexperienced teachers. Moreover, there were qualitative differences and similarities between them on what they noticed and how they analyzed the events that they noticed. Implications of the findings for teachers and teacher educators were apparent.Item A comparative analysis of the Turkish banking sector with the European Union while completing the Customs Union and in the process of full EC accession(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute of Social Sciences, 1996., 1996.) Altınay, Ümit.; Ertuna, İbrahim Özer,This study Turkish banking by Omit Altmay aims determining the competi ti ve sector and suggesting strategies position of to be and remain competitive against the European Internal Market. A brief history of the Turkish Banking Sector is provided to enable assessment of the development of the banking sector in Turkey. The affect of foreign banks in the domestic sector is analyzed. The Internal market, the harmonization process in EC and its effects on EC countries as well as on third countries to the community are discussed in detail to estimate the implications for the Turkish Banking Sector. The effects of the recent entry to the customs Union with the European Union is analyzed in terms of its indirect consequences on the banking sector. The liberalization and deregulation in Turkish banking sector is given and the importance of legislative unification and enhancing the competitive power of the sector is stressed. The issues that need to be highlighted when comparing Turkish Banking Sector against its EC counterparts are firstly the order of different scale in terms of assets and equity, secondly, high profitability, high operating costs and low producti vi ty, and thirdly the oligopolistic structure in the sector. Altough currently sUffering from the structural problems In the economy, Turkish banking is on the way of integration to international markets and in the process of enhancing the competitiveness against foreign banks.Item A comparative study of biological and social systems(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 1985., 1985.) Derya, Leyla.; Yumer, Ruhdan.Item A comparative study of bubble components(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2015., 2015.) Akyüz, Alp Güven Buğra.; Hatipoğlu Ali Ozan. The co-movement of prices across the world was highlighted during the Credit Crunch of 2008 and the following periods. Since the price drop is attributed to bursting bubbles, it is of interest whether bubbles also follow a diffusion process across countries. This thesis, calculates the bubble percentages using the Kalman Filter approach and runs Granger causality test in order to determine how bubbles spill over across countries. The results suggest that bubbles indeed spill over and the diffusion process is determined by the development level and economic ties of countries rather than geographical proximity. Moreover, bubbles spill over to emerging markets from developed ones and not the other way around. Whereas, the bubbles spill over across developed economies in a bilateral fashion. ivItem A comparative study of the growth of the public sector in the EEC countries(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University.
