Item A comparative analysis of the Turkish banking sector with the European Union while completing the Customs Union and in the process of full EC accession(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute of Social Sciences, 1996., 1996.) Altınay, Ümit.; Ertuna, İbrahim Özer,This study Turkish banking by Omit Altmay aims determining the competi ti ve sector and suggesting strategies position of to be and remain competitive against the European Internal Market. A brief history of the Turkish Banking Sector is provided to enable assessment of the development of the banking sector in Turkey. The affect of foreign banks in the domestic sector is analyzed. The Internal market, the harmonization process in EC and its effects on EC countries as well as on third countries to the community are discussed in detail to estimate the implications for the Turkish Banking Sector. The effects of the recent entry to the customs Union with the European Union is analyzed in terms of its indirect consequences on the banking sector. The liberalization and deregulation in Turkish banking sector is given and the importance of legislative unification and enhancing the competitive power of the sector is stressed. The issues that need to be highlighted when comparing Turkish Banking Sector against its EC counterparts are firstly the order of different scale in terms of assets and equity, secondly, high profitability, high operating costs and low producti vi ty, and thirdly the oligopolistic structure in the sector. Altough currently sUffering from the structural problems In the economy, Turkish banking is on the way of integration to international markets and in the process of enhancing the competitiveness against foreign banks.Item A comparative study of biological and social systems(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 1989., 1989.) Doğru, A. Ece.; Ertuna, İbrahim Özer,In the research reported here, the effectiveness of five capital investment ranking criteria are investigated by a simulation model under uncertain inflationary environment where the end results are evaluated in a comparative way. The investment alternatives studied by the simulation model based on realistic data obtained from Türkiye Sınai Kalkınma Bankası A.S. were evaluated according to five capital investment ranking criteria. The results of the net present worth of the firm and the profitability per year were compared for each ranking criteria. Findings of the research show that the investment ranking criteria which takes into consideration the time value of money are significantly better than the criteria which does not take into consideration the time value of money. It is also observed that as the initial investment level increases the decrease of capital rationing causes an increase in net present worth and the number of investments but a decrease in the profitability per year. Another important implication of the study is that the ranking criteria performs better under lower uncertainty than the higher uncertainty.Item A computer-aided production planning system for a fertilizer manufacturing company(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 1987., 1987.) Aksu, Feza.; Koçak, Ceyhan (Kozanoğlu). This study aims to design a specific Computer-Aided Production Planning System for a private chemical fertilizer manufacturing company in a recently liberalized market, within the bounds of the environmental and organizational conditions. The respective computer pacage has been designed as an integrated whole to achieve maximum flexibility and ease of application. The package consists of three main modules : Inventory Planning to maintain inventory investment at an optimum level; Material ReqUirements Planning to secure time phased availability of the inventory items and finally Capacity Requirements Planning to match the production schedules with the productive capability of the production centers. The framework includes two supplementary modules, namely ABC Analysis and Bill of Materials and read/write programs for the data files.Item A continuous auditing implementation with Benford’s law and relative discrepancies to an SME in Turkey(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2021., 2021.) Candan, Ali.; Coşkun, Ali.In this study, we analyze the proper use of Benford's Law in the technique of continuous auditing to determine the audit sample of a Small to Medium-Sized Enterprise (SME). Most other studies analyze corporate firms; however, we tested an SME with a relatively small data set. While testing, we determined the best technique, frequency, and data-set type to create an audit sample. We analyzed weekly and monthly time intervals. Also, we sought to answer the question of which dataset to analyze: the cumulative or non-cumulative one. To answer these questions, we benefited from Benford’s analysis and relative discrepancies techniques. The results demonstrate that using the relative discrepancies technique with a weekly cumulative dataset is the best option in our case.Item A cross-cultural study of environmental concern and attitudes among German, Dutch and Turkish publics(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 1993., 1993.) Ermin, Sevil.; Borak, Eser. The main purpose of the present study is to provide a framework related to the level of environmental concern. attitudes. and perceptions of Turkish, Dutch and German consumers. Examined subjects are awareness of the the consumers in the three countries about global and national environmental problems and level of importance of these problems; perceptions of environmentally friendliness and environmentally friendly products and companies as well as the perceived roles of related parties; actual participation level and willingness to contribute to the environmental solutions; perceived causes and solutions of problems; most common sources of environmental information. willingness to pay extra or taxes for an environmentally friendly product; and the impact of environmental friendliness on purchaSing behaviour. After a thorough review of the relevant literature on the subject of 'environment' is made. an empirical research has been conducted on the passengers of the Germany and Holland flights of a Turkish private airline company. A structured and an undisguised questionnaire has been given to a sample of 294 respondents by non-probabilistic judgemental sampling method through which the data for the study has been collected. Data are entered to Excel 4.0 and frequency analyses are made through this program and cross-tab analyses are made with SPSSPC. The major finding of the study is that a great percentage of Turkish, Dutch and German populations exhibit a high level of concern for the environmental problems of the 'world particularly. At national level, economic and social problems precede environmental ones, especially for the Turkish respondents. Dutch and Germans engage in recycling and careful disposal activities mostly, whereas the Turks mostly perform activities related to saving energy or other resources. Producers are perceived to be the major responsible party for environmental pollution; they and government are expected to work for the improvement of environmental quality. Implications upon the major findings of the study are discussed referring to four parties related to the subject; ie. producers, governments, consumers, and the researchers. Major contribution of the study has been to the literature, because of its generic function by offering data, background information and research scope. Another important contribution has been providing implications to the related individuals and organisations.Item A feasibility study on consumer finance companies(Thesis (M.A.) - Robert College. Kalyoncu, Feyzullah Alim.; Karaca, Hüseyin Sami.Recent advancements in sports analytics have found many fields of applications in basketball. Player performance prediction is one of the main goals of basketball analytics because of the potential implications for both teams and fans. This study aims to create a predictive modeling approach that is designed for accurately estimating the performances of basketball players while addressing the main issues in basketball statistics. Euroleague, the highest level of European basketball club competition, is selected to conduct our study. The data set used in this study contains 720 regular- season games from 2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2018-2019 Euroleague seasons. During these seasons, a total of 15368 records obtained from performances of 464 individual athletes. In order to create models for predicting performances of basketball players, we followed a structured data mining process. Most predictive models in the literature have relied on offensive statistics because of the scarcity of statistics that are related to defense. However, this study addresses the need for defensive metrics in player performance prediction, so far lacking in the literature. We developed a methodology and proposed a feature engineering approach to create data-driven defensive metrics. Our results demonstrate that the most significant boost in both R-squared and rmse values have been achieved after adding position-based defensive metrics.Item A field study on the comparison of the manufacturing companies before and after the positive real interest policy was put into effect(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 1987., 1987.) Güleşçi, Mehmet.; Ertuna, İbrahim Özer,In this thesis, the financial structure and operating results of manufacturing companies before and after the positive real interest rate policy was put into effect are compared. This study was conducted by way of analyzing the financial structure and operating results of manufacturing companies from those two time periods. All required figures related with the operating results of these companies were obtained from Istanbul Chamber of Industry Periodicals dated October 1985 and 1984 and Financial Analysis book written by Cihangir Samin. By using these figures, firstly the financial ratios that are used in financial analysis were calculated, and then these ratios were compared with each other by using statistical analysis methods. The findings of this study showed that in the aspect of financial structure, the difference between the two groups of manuacturing companies from those two time periods was significant. The discriminant function, mentioned in section 2.2.1, explains approximately 20% of the discrimination, leaving 80% unexplained, which means that there might be other independent variables that would effect the discriminant function. According to findings, it came out that var 4-Return to Equity, var 2-Euqity/Total Asset and var 6-Return on Sales each can be accepted as a discri~inator betw~en the two groups of companies.According to coefficients of the above variables, it is understood that companies from Group Two use more equity than companies from Group One, thus they have higher Equity/Total Asset Ratio and smaller Return to Equity Ratio. Return on Sales Ratio is higher for Group One companies which means that since financial expenses became higher due to the increase in interest rates, Return on Sales Ratio has decreased. In the study, the following limitations were encountered. Under the facility of the given figures, only six ratios were calculated. The other ratios that would be used in the analysis are indicated in Appendix I. The shareholders' equity figures include revaluation adjustment which otherwise would have changed the results. The selected 90 companies for each year were not the same in the four years which othenvise might have changed ·the results. Additionally, in the selection of dependent variables, Group Two companies were selected from the years of 1983 and 1984 which otherwise would also have changed the results of the study. We hope that the results obtained from this study may contribute to the understanding of financial analysis of the manufacturing companies.Item A financial early warning system for financial intermediary institutions by Neural networks(Thesis (Ph.D.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2010., 2010.) Demircioğlu, M. K. Tahir.; Akgiray, Vedat. The 2008 economic crises revealed that the existing financial system requires better monitoring and more effective regulations of the financial institutions. Straightforward implementation of tighter regulations will increase the costs of the financial system which will eventually hurt economic development. In order to minimize the effects of tighter regulations on the costs, regulators shall also consider taking advantage of new methods which are more complicated than existing ones. This dissertation proposes a financial early warning system for broker dealers in Turkey. Discriminant Analysis and Neural Networks are used comparatively and cooperatively to develop the model tailored for broker dealers. An extensive database is formed by Capital Adequacy Reports that were collected by Capital Markets Board for the period between 1999 and 2009. Access to this database contributed to this study in many ways through its tailored structure truly reflecting the financial standings of this industry. Popular independent variables in the literature are used and new ones are also proposed in order to take advantage of the details in the extensive database. Discriminant Analysis is used to elect the important independent variables that formed the backbone of the model, although most of the important a priori assumptions were violated. Neural Networks picked up from where Discriminant Analysis left and final model provided approximately 75% classification accuracy. Such a figure may seem low compared to similar studies. However the model predicts the deficiency in the capital adequacy, a pre-default event, which is obviously more difficult to predict than default itself.Item A forecasting approach for an evaluation of television set sector in Turkey(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 1987., 1987.) Ceyhan, Kemal.; Bodur, Muzaffer. The government and corporate planners are facing sets of problem in identifying the promising industries, their market potential, future demand potential and future competitiveness. The purpose of this study is to investigate the television set sector in Turkey and evaluate future demand potential and future competitiveness of Turkish television sets. Chapter one gives some basic concepts about the product. chapter two examines the past history of the sector in the world as well as production and demand figures of TV sets in Turkey. Chapter three studies Turkish export and import figures for TV sets. Chapter four examines the demand prospects in Turkey by approaching the subject with cross sectional tools as well as domestic variables and domestic TV set demand functions. Demand figures until 1991 areestimafed in this chapter. Chapter five is a detailed analysis of the cost of a Turkish TV set produced under the licence of a foreign company in case of acceptance of agreed EEC custom duties of ANKARA agreement. Chapter six summarizes the findings of the study and states the :conclusions and implications. We conclude that although future TV set market in Turkey will be sufficient for the exploitation of the full capacity of the existing manufacturers, the sector will face serious threats in the future because of production technology and expected competition with the imported TV sets.Item A heuristic approach to the production planning and the line balancing problems in a metal processing industry(Thesis (M.A.) - Robert College. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 1992., 1992.) Özen, Ahmet.; Odabaşı, Attila.Management Information Systems provide managers with information used in decision making and problem solving. A well designed system will definitely assist managers whereas an ill-structured system may cause big losses. There are various mechanisms for the preparation of effective management information systems (MIS). This study shows how a management information system is developed for production control purposes in a factory producing shaving products. The aim of the study is forming a production control system which will report resources (i.e. machines and labor) performances so that decisions to minimize costs may be taken in advance. First step in every MIS development project is the requirements analysis and determination. For this reason, the current system is analyzed, data flow diagrams and data dictionaries are prepared. Using these tools, weaknesses and strengths of the current system are determined. The next step is to design a new system which also make use of data flow diagrams and data dictionaries. And a data model for whole system is formed and implemented using a fourth generation computer language. The tests last for two months where no questions remain unanswered about the new system. The key parameters for the production managers are controlled after six months of operation. And the contnbutions of the MIS system ( PCS ) are stated by the production managers and the factory manager.Item A marketplace with unusual dynamics:|An investigation of shopper behaviour in travel retail sector(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2019., 2019.) Örendil, Emre.; Arısan, Belgin.; Borak, Eser. This paper attempts to contribute to the previously conducted research in investigating the behaviour of shoppers in the travel retail industry, especially at airports. Revenues generated by duty-free stores have become the top non aeronautical income sources of airports, and this sector promises to increase its impact if the actual needs of travellers and growth opportunities are studied correctly. As the nature of travel stands out of the ordinary routines, conventional rules of consumer behaviour are not sufficient to describe those at the airport environment. Explanations for the dynamics of travel retail are provided by studying the effective shopping motivators, stimuli, and circumstances in this unique context. This study relates aforementioned factors to the likelihood of shopping from duty-free stores and investigates how they are related. In order to better understand this likelihood, this study embraces a quantitative approach by analysing the data collected from Turkish respondents participated in a large-scale survey (n = 513) . The analysis of the responses leads to deeper comprehension of the travellers’ inner worlds. By elaborating on the analyses, numerous managerial implications which have the potential of being notably beneficial to the business are suggested.Item A measure of omnichannel customer experience (OCX) :|key dimensions and effects on customer metrics(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2021., 2021.) Erdem, Dilek.; Arısan, Belgin. With the advancements in technology the emergence of online channels has led to proliferation of sales channels. With the enabling forces of integration and technology, multiple channels have evolved into fully integrated channels to satisfy the customers, who are powerful more than ever. Consequently, omnichannel has emerged as the solution provided by the retailers to satisfy the customer, who desires to create her own shopping experience. Omnichannel retail, the dominant retail strategy among 66 percent of global population after the coronavirus outbreak, has become the priority for retail businesses. This study implements two-step approach. First, conceptualizing omnichannel customer experience (OCX) and developing a reliable and valid scale to measure OCX. Second, evaluating the behavioral impact of the construct on key customer metrics (customer satisfaction, loyalty, and wordof- mouth). To this aim, after the specification of omnichannel customer experience domain, underlying dimensions, and corresponding items, a survey study (n = 403) was conducted. After the data was cleared from the unsuitable age group responses, the sample was randomly split into two groups, first half was utilized to identify the dimensions and the structure of OCX through exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Afterward, the model was validated as a one factor second-order model as the outcome of the second split through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). In the second part, the structural model had shown the direct behavioral impact of OCX on customer satisfaction and word-of-mouth and indirect effect on loyalty and word-ofmouth through the mediating role of customer satisfaction.Item A perceived service quality model in the sharing economy: The case of airbnb(Thesis (Ph.D.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2019., 2019.) Açar, Murat.; Toker, Ayşegül.The shift from ownership to access, the results of endless hyper-consumption, and the change in value mindsets initiated a new phenomenon, which is Sharing Economy (SE). SE has given rise to the humanization of consumer-supplier relationship in tourism and hospitality (TH), and sharing has become a mainstream practice. Airbnb has revolutionized the TH service in a new form of the contractual relationship and gained well-grounded popularity. The customers’ willingness to share accommodation with a host in Airbnb as opposed to using a private hotel room has implications for TH in terms of perceived service quality of customers. In this study, a perceived service quality (PSQ) model is researched by text mining on user generated content in the Airbnb context. We first collect a massive amount of Airbnb guests’ textual review data, which is publicly available. Then, we analyze Airbnb guests’ Big5 personalities using these personal texts by linguistic analytics and state the psychometric insights. We find that Airbnb guests score high in extraversion and openness dimensions of Big5. Then, using the personality traits of consumers as a basis, we test our PSQ model, which is a combination of the seminal SERVQUAL service quality framework and additional cognitive and attitudinal factors. The findings include that the SERVQUAL model requires adjustment in this context, and it is well-enhanced by cognitive and attitudinal factors, including intimacy, authenticity, privacy, and security. The study also discusses additional exploratory findings on Airbnb guests’ textual review data through text mining.Item A product-mix problem in sanitary paper sector(Thesis (M.A.)- Bogazici University.
