Item Journalistic translation in Turkey : a critical approach to the concepts of “Transediting” and “Journalator”(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Graduate Institute of Social Sciences, 2022., 2022) Turan, Eda.; Akdoğan, Fazilet.This study explores the role of translation in foreign news reporting and journalistic practices from a Translation Studies perspective and aims at demonstrating to what extent the most frequently employed concepts of “transediting” (Stetting, 1989) and “journalator” (van Doorslaer, 2012) shed light on the journalistic translation practices in Turkey. This thesis consists of two parts that combine process-oriented and product-oriented research. The first part provides the findings of the interviews conducted with two groups of journalist- translators who have an educational background in Translation Studies and journalism-related fields respectively and work at the foreign news departments of the news agencies in Turkey. These findings evaluate the impact of educational background on whether the journalist-translators define their daily tasks as a translational activity. In the second part of this thesis, journalistic translation examples created by the interviewees are analyzed to determine the journalistic translation strategies exercised by the journalist-translators and discuss whether these findings overlap with the analyses of interview results. This thesis reveals the influence of educational background in Translation Studies on the description of journalist-translators in each group about their daily tasks and also examines whether the terms “transediting” and “journalator” are more explanatory than “translation” and “translators” in explaining journalistic translation processes and practices.Item The rise of multimodality : applying translation criticism to video games(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Graduate Institute of Social Sciences, 2022., 2022) Sönmez, Mehmet Eren.; Hodjikj, Ena.This thesis explores how the video game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (W3WH) and its official translation alongside a fan translation into Turkish can be systematically analyzed by a translation criticism model. The study also focuses on how the recent rise of multimodality within Translation Studies can offer new perspectives in the way translation is viewed. Based on the literature on video game translation practices, this study carries out a discussion on the terminology used to describe such practices, analyzing the variety in the use of terms from the perspective of the expanding research area of Translation Studies. By investigating the two translations of the video game W3WH, the study aims to find out the differences in translation strategies between the official translation and the fan translation. The study also discusses the choice of fan translators to continue with their translation process despite the launch of the official translation. Moreover, the industry’s reduced view of translation is challenged, in contrast with localization and transcreation. Within this frame, the study relies on a critical analysis that integrates the different modes and assets in the video game to draw a comprehensive picture of the gameplay experience. The thesis hopes to increase the cooperation between academia and industry by promoting a bidirectional learning process.Item Translation and the authorial image:reception of Latife Tekin's literary works within the source and target culture(s)(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Ayhan, Ayşe.; Paker, Saliha.This thesis analyzes the reception of Latife Tekin's literary works and her authorial image shaped within the source and target culture(s). Exploring the role rewriters/rewritings, including translation, play in the reception and image-shaping processes, the study demonstrates that there exists a dual interaction between the source and target culture(s) receptions of Tekin's works. This thesis discusses the source culture and the target culture(s) receptions of Tekin's works, respectively, and presents a comparative account of the differences and similarities in the reception of Tekin's works. By analyzing all these aspects, this thesis aims to survey how rewritings have been influential in the reception of Tekin's literary works and to examine how the authorial image has been determined and transformed within both the source and target culture(s).Item The image of Nazım Hikmet and his poetry in Anglo-American literary systems in 2002(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Ergil, Başak.; Kaplan, ismail.The aim of this thesis is to look into the image of Nâzım Hikmet and his poetry in Anglo-American literary systems in 2002 through a paratextual analysis. Nâzım Hikmet is crucial for the realm of translation studies since he is the Turkish poet who has been translated into English more than any other Turkish poet and who has been translated into as many as more than fifty languages. Besides, the year 2002 is the year when four books of Hikmet's translated poetry were published abroad. Two of these books were published in the U.S.A, one in Paris, and one in London.Since this study aims to carry out a research on the image of Hikmet and his poetry from a historical perspective; the image before 2002 is also examined within its socio-political background. In the first chapter of the thesis, the anthologies, reviews, criticisms and selected poetry books published in Anglo-American literary systems are examined through paratextual analysis and discourse analysis and the image of Hikmet and his poetry before 20022 is discussed. A similar methodology is employed in the second chapter of the thesis to carry out an analytic research on the four target texts of Hikmet's selected poetry published in 2002. In the last chapter of this thesis, the reception of these four books as well as the image created through their reviews and criticisms are discussed through discourse analysis of these metatexts. This study is a research-oriented, historical, descriptive study wherein the gradual change of the image of Hikmet and his poetry is revealed through the description and evaluation of the visual paratextual elements as well as discursive analyses of the textual ones. In conclusion, the evaluation of the research data reveals that the change of the image of Hikmet and his poetry in Anglo-American literary systems is reflective of the 2oth century socio-political background and that there is a discrepancy between the images formed before and after the dissolution of the Communist bloc.Item (Un)Bridging the GAP: The case of translations from Yugoslav literature into Turkish (1962-2001)(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Dansuk, Fatma Cihan.; Kaplan, ismail.The purpose of the present study is to examine and analyze the factors instrumental in the translations from Yugoslav literature into Turkish. Turkish and the "Yugoslav" peoples lived together for more than 500 years under the Ottoman rule. However, this coexistence had a minuscule rolein the flow of literary translations from Yugoslav literature into Turkish. After reviewing the works of scholars of translation, literature, and history and providing a historical account of Yugoslav literature, this study dwells upon the Yugoslav literature in Turkish translation. As translations from Yugoslav literature into Turkish are traced from 1962 up to 2001, forewords and afterwords written by translators and editors, and the backgrounds of these translators are scanned. Finally, the socio-politicaland cultural relations between two peoples throughout history are explored. The examination of these aspects reveals that translations fromYugoslav literature into Turkish have three main factors. The first factor isthe power relations, i.e. the Western dominance in cultural life visible inliterary standards and international literary awards. The second factor is the official ideology of the Republican period that can be defined as "the official amnesia" towards the Balkans in general and the "former" Yugoslavia in particular. Finally, the third factor is the limited number oftranslators and publishers dedicating their efforts to translating Yugoslav literature into Turkish.Item A translational journey: Orhan Pamuk in english(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2004., 2004.) Yılmaz, Melike.; Karantay, Suat.The purpose of the present study is to examine the factors instrumental in the translational journey of Orhan Pamuk into English. Orhan Pamuk, who has been established in Turkey as a distinct literary figure since the late 1970s, now stands as the second most translated Turkish writer into English (after Yaşar Kemal). His novels have been readily translated into English in priority over many other works of Turkish literature. First reviewing Turkish literature in English translation and then Orhan Pamuk's literary career and the literary features of his novels, the study then focuses upon the question why his novels have been selected for translation into English. In order to answer this question, a corpus of reviews and critical essays in English on Pamuk and his novels, as well as interviews are examined. Such an analysis is based on the rationale that reviewers, critics and translators (considered rewriters by André Lefevere), having substantial manipulative power in the reception of an author or a literary work in a literary system, may provide key information on the factors. The examination of the corpus reveals three main factors. These factors are indeed those usually foregrounded by reviewers and critics. The first factor is the literary value of his works, the second is the juxtaposition of the dichotomy of East and West in his novels to create a synthesis, and the third and the last is his social and political awareness in regard to issues such as human rights, freedom of expression, terrorism and politics, whether national or universal.Item An analytical study on the migration of Sartrean existentialism into Turkey through translation(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2004., 2004.) Koş, Ayşenaz.; Karantay, Suat.The central concern of this thesis is to explore the role played by translation when a philosophical theory moves across cultural and linguistic boundaries. The study reveals the double role of translation in this migration, both "indicative" and "formative". (Susam-Sarajeva 2002 : 10) While translation together with other related "rewritings" allows us an insight into the mechanisms of the receiving system, it also contributes greatly to the image formation of the writer as well as to the formation of a local discourse.The thesis presents an account of the reception of existentialism in Turkey from the late 1940s to the present. Referring particularly to Jean-Paul Sartre's nonfiction works translated into Turkish and to the indigenous writings on Sartre and existentialism, and to extratextual material accompanying translations as well, the changing images of Sartre in Turkey are displayed. Issues of terminology and retranslation in the transfer of Sartre's texts are also focused on.Item The Turkish translation and staging of Arturo Ui from the perspective of Verfremdungseffekt :|an analysis(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2021., 2021.) Moralı, Mert.; Ross, Jonathan Maurice.This thesis investigates whether, and if so, how Verfremdungseffekt has been conveyed in the Turkish translation and staging of Bertolt Brecht’s Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui, the fruit of the efforts of the translator Yücel Erten and the director Ümit Aydoğdu. To that aim, within the framework of Verfremdungseffekt and Pavis’ notion of mise en scène, a comparative analysis is carried out of the original text, the translation, and the Tiyatroadam theatre company’s performance of the play in 2013. By making the familiar strange, Brecht’s Verfremdung aims to encourage the audience to reflect on the socio-economic and political aspects of the events on the stage. Patrice Pavis’ mise en scène offers potentially fruitful insight into the symbiotic relationship between the text and performance, a key feature of Brechtian theatre. As part of the comparative analysis, the role of the director Ümit Aydoğdu and the methods he applied in his production are examined. Aydoğdu’s Arturo Ui suggests that an effective mise en scène can be created if the director remains alert to the needs and resources of multiple semiotic systems. By fostering a symbiotic relationship between these systems, a director may succeed in realizing Verfremdungseffekt in the staging of a translated play, especially if they (like the translator) make effective use of the methods of compensation and amplification. In this sense, by illuminating the roles of the translator and the director, this thesis demonstrates how Erten’s translation serves as a crucial foundation for the achievement of Verfremdungseffekt on the stage in a symbiotic manner.Item Wallace’s Ghosts and Capote’s Voices:|An interdisciplinary approach to style-aware reading in literary translation(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2019., 2019.) Bekmen, Cemal Batuhan.; Hodjikj, Ena.In this thesis, I draw upon the theoretical insights from ‘contextualized’ Stylistics and the methods of Literary Stylistics, as adapted to Translation Studies by Jean Boase Beier’s stylistic approach to literary translation and Kirsten Malmkjær’s ‘translational stylistics’, and investigate the implications of a ‘style-aware approach’ to reading in literary translation. Within the frameworks provided by Boase-Beier and Malmkjær, I present a two-part, process-oriented study, revolving around the concept of ‘mind style’, which I understand as the textual choices of the writer giving access to a mental state embedded within the text. In the first part, I discuss how the style-aware approach affects the reading phase of the process of translation. I conduct a translational stylistic analysis of “Incarnations of Burned Children” by David Foster Wallace, aimed specifically for translation into Turkish. The analysis indicates how Wallace employs a ‘ghost-narrator’ in his story and deals with ‘self centeredness’. In the second part of my study, I focus on how the style-aware approach may affect the way we read translated literature. I explore Ülker İnce’s stylistic strategies in Başka Sesler, Başka Odalar and how she recreates Truman Capote’s style in Other Voices, Other Rooms. I claim that İnce’s translation focuses on recreating Capote’s experimental language while removing the contexts of community and gender. The thesis promotes a ‘contextualized’, reader-inclusive approach to literary style, and argues that it can be a useful tool in strategy building in the process of translation and provide the translator with theoretical and methodological grounding to support her choices.Item From minority writer to Turkish exemplar: How Elif Shafak was consecrated for the Arab reader(Thesis (Ph.D.)-Bogazici University. Öztürk, Sare Rabia.; Demirkol, Şule.; Suçin, Mehmet Hakkı,; Baykara, Oğuz.This thesis discusses the various socio-cultural developments that gave rise to the wide recognition of Elif Shafak in the Arab field of cultural production after her novel The Forty Rules of Love was published in 2012 in Arabic translation. It overviews the changing Turkish-Arab relations, mainly in the realm of culture and ideology, from their mutual Ottoman past to their post-Ottoman present. It also revisits the changing status of Sufi mysticism (major theme of The Forty Rules of Love) in Turkish and Arabic cultures according to prevailing ideologies and popular practices of religion. It includes in the discussion each culture’s relation to the Western world, especially as regards cultural translation. It also discusses the roles played by different kinds of agency in establishing Shafak’s name in the Arab context and the dynamics of representation and cultural translation that were at play in such undertaking. Its theoretical framework is structured through reference to Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory, Homi K. Bhabha’s concepts of hybridity and cultural translation, and Mona Baker’s account of social narrative theory, combined with Nedret Kuran-Burçoglu’s synthesis of imagology and translation studies. The thesis is concluded with a descriptive and critical analysis of two samples extracted respectively from Shafak’s novels The Bastard of Istanbul and The Forty Rules of Love, the former for understanding translational actions around the Turkish identity and the latter for understanding translational actions around Sufi mysticism. The analysis incorporates the English original, the Turkish translation and the two Arabic translations of each novel.Item Delayed for forty years :|the journey of Anayurt Oteli from Turkish into English(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2019., 2019.) Telaferli Kalaycıoğlu, Yağmur.; Cengiz, Ayşenaz.This study aims to answer the question why Fred Stark’s translation of Anayurt Oteli into English had to wait for 40 years to get published. I propose that approaching the question with Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological conception of the field of cultural production will yield the answer I seek. I argue that a contrastive sociological study that analyzes the contexts and paratexts surrounding the novel and the actual texts reveals how agents form discourse on two levels: the textual and the meta-discursive. On the textual level, I argue that in translation Anayurt Oteli is (re-)contextualized in the American literary system, demonstrating the Turkish individual torn in between the East and the West. On the latter level, I claim that the meta-discourse on translation still perpetuates Lawrence Venuti’s (2004) postulates of fluency and invisibility. I observe that de-/re-contextualization, fluency and invisibility are dictates of a commercialized book market. I maintain that in the near future, as modes of all production change due to the ecological crisis that the earlier few centuries’ greed for economic growth has resulted in, our expectations from cultural production will also shift towards practices of sustainable, subjective and intimate nature. I argue that with such a change, our understanding of the (in)visibility of the translators and ways to foreground their presence will have to follow suit. Accordingly, I offer an alternative, ecological model that foregrounds the unwritten, human aspects of the profession. I offer the profile of Fred Stark as an example to this new ecological understanding.Item Commercial translation and professional translation practitioners in the era of cognitive capitalism :|a critical analysis(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2019., 2019.) Fırat, Gökhan.; Kaplan, İsmail.This thesis investigates how current technological advances affect commercial translation and the working conditions of professional translation practitioners in the era of cognitive capitalism. Based on previous research, it can be deduced that the technological transformation of the language industry to date has (i) led to indirect production networks, (ii) created one-sided intellectual property practices, (iii) devalued translator’s skills and outputs. My primary conclusion is that as long as the aforementioned outcomes of previous technological developments prevail, current technological developments will not improve the role and position of professional translation practitioners. Instead, they will be rearranged and reorganized in space and time in accordance with the production methods and working conditions of cognitive capitalism. In order to provide a critical analysis, I utilized (i) Cognitive Capitalism Theory, (ii) the industry reports by TAUS (iii) research papers on digital platforms by ILO and (iv) a survey conducted with 70 professional translation practitioners residing in Turkey. Drawing on theoretical exploration, this study introduces the “uberization of translation” as one of the most recent manifestations of the cognitive capitalism era, and the field research suggests that engaging in such work exposes professional translation practitioners to risks related to employment status, adequate income, work-life balance, social protections, free agency, bargaining power, dependence on platform, fair allocation of risks and rewards, and data collection, protection and privacy.Item Turkish-English subtitling strategies in Turkey :|the case of the 2014 Istanbul film festival(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2019., 2019.) Baturay, Müzeyyen.; Ross, Jonathan Maurice.This thesis deals with the strategies adopted by the translators who provide English language subtitles for Turkish movies at the Istanbul Film Festival. The target audience of the English subtitles consists of both people within the sector (directors, festival organizers etc.) and foreign people living in or visiting Turkey. This non homogenous target audience makes the translation decision process more difficult. The study analyses 21 Turkish films translated by two Festival translators, a corpus which varies in terms of genre, content, and language use. It looks at the translators’ treatment of certain translation crisis points and of longer samples. This translation analysis is supplemented by the findings from questionnaires answered by the translators and interviews with the ex- and current subtitle coordinator and translators of the film festival. This exploratory research presents data on the Festival and on translation practices there, which have not been dealt with systematically before. The translation strategies are explained and categorized with the help of Pedersen’s taxonomy of strategies and his notion of parameters (2005). The results are interpreted in terms of translational norms and the binary opposition between foreignization and domestication. It emerges that the translators opt for both source- (foreignization) and target-oriented (domestication) strategies. Translators seek more pragmatic solutions due to the particular requirements of subtitling. Translation decisions can be said to reflect a combination of norms and idiosyncrasies. The tendency towards domestication (target-oriented decisions) is more dominant, which makes the subtitles more fluent and easier for the target audience to follow.Item The professionalization of sign language interpreting in Turkey: Interpreter training and public interpreting services(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2017., 2017.) Conker, Nesrin.; Hicks, Martin Cyr.This thesis explores the development and current status of sign language interpreting in Turkey since 2005, which was the year that marked the official recognition of Turkish Sign Language (TİD) and the Deaf community’s right to interpreting. The study focuses mainly on the state-led (through the Ministry of Family and Social Affairs) community interpreting services available for the Deaf and the interpreter training programs designed by the Ministry of National Education (MEB). Within this scope, the study aims to find out the degree of cooperation among the stakeholders authorized by the Turkish government to plan and provide language services for the Deaf and how effective the current interpreting services are. Based on the literature on the professionalization of community interpreting services, the current study determines at which state sign language interpreting in Turkey stands on its journey towards professionalization. Within this frame, the study mainly relies on the information received from the relevant stakeholders regarding their work, views, expectations and cooperation with other actors involved in the planning and/or provision of the interpreting services for the Deaf. In addition to drawing a picture of the current state of sign language interpreting in Turkey, the study ends with a number of recommendations to further develop and professionalize the field based on the international best practices. The thesis also hopes to increase the visibility of sign language interpreting in Turkey as a developing profession that requires further attention and cooperation from the Turkish government, professional organizations and academia.Item Aspects of agency in the case of editor-translators in the 1990s Turkey(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute of Social Sciences, 2004., 2004.) Ezber, Gökçen, 1978-; Paker, Saliha.The present study focuses on the different aspects of agrncy in translational phenımena in the case of editor translators in the 1990s Turkey. The theoretical framework of the study ia largely drawn by the recent focus on cultural and sociological issues in translaton studies. The initial aim of this study is to reveal that translation is a socially regulated activity with active agents under focus. Following the cultural theorist Itamar Even-Zohar's and the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu's conceptual framework, the study focuses on both the social-cultural and personal aspects of translatorial agency in the case of the five editor-translators, Celal Uster, Ulker İnce, İlknur Ozdemir, Yurdanur Salman ve Cevat Çapan, inthe 1990s Turkey. The contextualisation of the different roles and positions of these agents reveal that different aspects of agency of the editor-translators in the 1990s were shaped both by their personal dispositions and socio-cultural facts of the field in which they operate. The findings of the study reveal that research in different aspects of agency and socio-cultural factors offer a fresh perspective for the study of translatorial issues.Item Foregrounding the long-time backgrounded: Turkish translations of foregrounded heteroglossia and the postcolonial Identity of Trainspotting(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2017., 2017.) Er, Recai.; Hicks, Martin Cyr.This study aims to analyze how the foregrounded aspects of the subversive novel Trainspotting (1994) are translated into Turkish. It situates the heteroglot novel Trainspotting by the Scottish author Irvine Welsh among the attempts that intend to subvert the hegemony of Standard English and the colonial desires of the British. The study is processed with the theoretical guidance of Homi Bhabha, Antoine Berman, Lawrence Venuti, Gayatri Spivak and Kwame Anthony Appiah, with the conceptual guidance of Mikhail Bakhtin’s heteroglossia and with the methodological framework of the theory of foregrounding. Although the theory of foregrounding will be the main methodological tool of this study, it will also make use of Gideon Toury’s norms (1995) to analyze the possible reasons of translators’ choices. After providing elaborated discussion on heteroglossia, the theory of foregrounding and the contextual frameworks of both source and target texts, a descriptive analysis of the translations of Trainspotting is carried. Within the textual analysis of the target texts, it has been observed that translators mostly deal with the foregrounded aspects of the novel with an inconsistent strategy. The heteroglot and vulgar language of the novel and the postcolonial identity enhanced with heteroglossia are mostly attempted to be relayed with nonstandard vernacular language. However, even though, this strategy gives a flavor of alienation in terms of the stylistic aspect of heteroglossia, it fails to retain the socio-ideological aspect of the language stratification.Item The Turkish Ordeal: written in “Voluntary” exile, self-translated under ideological embargo(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2017., 2017.) Kürük, Nur Zeynep.; Akbatur, Arzu.This study explores the ideological embargo on Halide Edib Adıvar and her self translation of The Turkish Ordeal into Turkish by analyzing the non-translated parts in the English original. Halide Edib wrote the second volume of her memoirs in English, when she was in a “voluntary” exile in England in 1928. However, she did not translate The Turkish Ordeal into Turkish until 1960. When its Turkish version, Türk’ün Ateşle İmtihanı was published in 1962, a considerable amount of the source text was omitted by Edib herself. In this study, these omitted/non-translated parts are examined through a descriptive and comparative textual analysis, in relation to Halide Edib’s self-translation practice by investigating her political and personal position as well as the ideological environment of Turkey between the 1920s and the early 1960s. Halide Edib had a more critical tone in her narration while she was living abroad and writing in English. However, her criticism of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and some of his politics, her nationalist emphasis on the minority issues and her rather ‘sincere’ personal thoughts have been lost in non-translation. From this perspective, this study asserts that the overall message of Halide Edib’s memoir has changed losing also its critical tone, and turned into a discourse which seems to be supporting or confirming the official state narrative of Turkey. It is also possible to conclude that her representation has remained incomplete in the Turkish context because of the non-translated parts.Item The transfer of religious Themes And Allusions in the Turkish retranslations of The Waste Land(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2017., 2017.) Gül, Zeynep Gül.; Akbatur, Arzu.This study investigates whether and how the countless religious allusions in The Waste Land, specifically to Christianity, which T. S. Eliot created through subtle religious imagery, and the themes, which he built upon the legendary religious symbols and motifs were transferred in the six translations of the poem into Turkish. Through my own translation of the poem, the study also offers a method as to how these foreign allusions and themes can be transferred into Turkish. In the analysis, the study explores and discusses which translational decisions were made and were not made while transferring an understanding of a superstructure, such as religion- which is a compound of values and knowledge understood and shared by the individuals of society- and its notions- which permeates through social life and common understanding by means of past folk stories and parables- into another cultural structure, in a literary form such as poetry, and through allusions. In addition to this, the motives to retranslate The Waste Land , the reasons for some specific translational decisions in the retranslations of the poem are questioned. The study presents findings and evidences as to whether the translation strategies in retranslations are correlated with time, institutions and changing linguistic and translational norms.Item The “Once-Forgotten” Turkish bestseller: (Re-) contextualizing Sabahattin Ali’s Madonna in a Fur Coat(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Malaymar, Deniz.; Akbatur, Arzu.This thesis explores the reason(s) why Sabahattin Ali’s novel, Kürk Mantolu Madonna, was translated into English after 73 years and how it has been (re-)presented and (re-)contextualized in the Anglophone world. Apart from the Anglophone context, the thesis investigates the way Sabahattin Ali and his work have been re-created and re-contextualized in the Turkish context in order to be able to analyze the recent ‘unexpected’ and ‘surprise’ popularity of Kürk Mantolu Madonna in the source culture. In the light of Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of “agency” and his field theory, the thesis also focuses on the key role of the publishers in the source and target cultures, as well as the editor of Kürk Mantolu Madonna as social agents in the “consecration”, (re-)creation and (re-)contextualization of the book both in Turkey and in the international arena. In the thesis, a critical, descriptive and comparative analysis of Madonna in a Fur Coat and Kürk Mantolu Madonna will be carried out by employing Gideon Toury’s (1995) “operational” and “matricial norms” to foreground the differences between the source and target texts by pointing out the necessity of having (co-)translators and copy editors, who are native speakers of source language, in the case of books translated from minor(ity) languages and literatures in particular.Item Translating humor: a comparative analysis of three translations of Three Men in a Boat(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Karavin, Harika.; Berk, Özlem.When academic studies on translating humor are examined in Turkey, there are not sufficient sources or data providing enough space for the discussion of the issue. It is also observed that most of the available studies focus on the linguistic and cultural problems observed in the transference of humorous elements in audio-visual texts and deal only with the translation of the specific humorous elements (e.g. wordplay) in terms of verbal humor. As a conclusion, it has been found out that there does not exist a comprehensive study in the target system that provides detailed information on the translation of verbal humor and the problems to be observed in the translation process. Since the translation strategies display differences in relation to the type of humorous device that texts include, studies focusing on the translation of different humorous devices are required. For this purpose, a descriptive comparison of the three l f J m K. J m ’ f m u l Three Men in a Boat including different humorous devices has been carried out. In the comparisons, the g x ’ lu c h u c x ’ hum u ff c h b analyzed in a descriptive manner and an objective translation criticism has been presented. The textual analysis has benefited from the General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH) (Raskin and Attardo 1991) in defining similarities and differences in the translations.
