Item Consumer attitudes toward video ads; impact of information quality, information source and brand favorability(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2022., 2022) Elmas, Yavuz Selim.; Türker, Hande.Digital video advertising is undoubtedly a part of consumers’ digital journeys. Thus, it is worth to study how consumer’s digital experience is affected. With regard to that, this study employed an adopted Information Adoption Model with an aim to understand how argument quality, source credibility, brand favorability, and general attitude towards advertising affects likeability and effectiveness of digital video ads both for brand and line extensions. Two surveys have been responded by a total of 998 people. Nature of the study required a semi experimental two-by-two design which entails a pair of ads with and without a celebrity from a line extension, as well as a pair of ads with and without a celebrity from a brand extension. In accordance with it, in this research it had been concluded all these four are reliable variables to be employed in measurements, while a small limitation applies. According to the results of multiple regression analyses; argument quality, source credibility, brand favorability and general attitude towards advertising are statistically significant variables that affect the likeability of digital video ads with celebrity appearance and also effectiveness on digital video ads with celebrity appearance, with separate hypotheses. Moreover, argument quality, brand favorability and general attitude towards advertising are statistically significant variables that affect the likeability of digital video ads without celebrity appearance and also effectiveness of digital video ads without celebrity appearance. Within group paired sample t-test results shows that ad pairs with celebrity appearances whether they are line extensions or brand extensions have significant difference in comparison to ad pairs without celebrity appearances in terms of both ad likeability and ad effectiveness while some limitations apply to ad likeability due to observed confounding effects. Lastly, between group independent samples t-test results indicate that while there is a significant difference between extensions with regard to ad effectiveness, no such significance is detected for ad likeability.Item Mobile serious games: Effects on students’ understanding of programming concepts and attitudes towards information technology(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2018., 2018.) Yallıhep, Mirac; Kutlu, Birgül.The purpose of this study is to measure the impacts of mobile serious games on fifth grade students’ attitudes towards their course and achievements in programming concepts. For this purpose, a five weeks long study was conducted in a primary school in Turkey with 36 fifth grade students. Twenty-one students which are in the experiment group played the mobile serious game Lightbot which teaches some basic programming concepts on iPad for three weeks in one hour of the information technology and software course. On the other hand, the control group, which consisted of 15 students, had their lectures in information technology and software course according to the curriculum which is determined by the Ministry of Education of Turkey. In order to collect the data from the participants pretest-posttest design was used and the results were analyzed to test the hypotheses of the study. Data analysis results showed a significant increase in the achievements of the students in programming concepts after playing the Lightbot game while control group’s test results showed no increase. However, the treatment with the game did not create any positive impact on the attitudes of the students towards the information technology and software course as expected and further research in this field is necessary to verify this result.Item Critical success factors for e-Municipality implementation: The case of Istanbul(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. There are 39 municipalities and that means 82% of these municipalities are covered in that research. Some of them are applied online and some of them are administered personally. Collected data is analyzed by SPSS software. For testing hypotheses, ANOVA, Regression and Chi-square analysis methods were applied. At the end of these analyses, it can be said that a highly used e-municipality system is directly correlated with development strategy, website functionality, website usability can be concluded that usage rate of e-municipalities is high in Istanbul.Item A decision support system for evaluating information technology projects(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2017., 2017.) Atlı, Şeyhmus.; Mardikyan, Sona Kunuzyan. The increasing pressures of global competition, the continuous stream of innovative technologies, and the introduction of new products to satisfy customer needs make Information Technology (IT) projects a key element of the business market. Due to the proactive nature of IT, its value is difficult to evaluate in advance, which means that organizations often select to implement IT projects that do not realize the intended benefits. A well-designed selection process for IT projects should decrease the failure rate of implemented solutions and increase the financial success of the companies. This study attempts to resolve the IT project selection problem in the companies by combining an ANP with fuzzy logic and strengthening the solution with a Monte Carlo simulation. While there have been previous attempts to combine any two of the three underlying methods, the combination of all three should lead to a method that gives optimal results for any given case. The study reviews existing literature on IT project selection. Every criteria that can be relevant to IT projects are obtained with literature review and currently significant ones are selected using feedback from experts. The most effective ones respectively finance, organizational goals, risk and technical are used for the study. Based on existing knowledge and analysis of problems facing the companies, a detailed theoretical model is developed and applied to a real-world case study. In this context, this study should be useful to IT project selection committee members and researchers in the field of decision making, but it should also be of interest to IT managers of companies.Item The relationship between personality traits and behaviors of instagram users vs. non-users(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2017., 2017.) Koçak, Esra.; Nasır, Aslıhan.Social media platforms have become extensively used as communication tools and information sources among people through the advancements in online technologies. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2017., 2017.) Çimen, Barış.; Durahim, Ahmet Onur. The objective of this study is to bring an approach that incorporates word embeddings into Turkish text classification process, and to evaluate the applicability and performance of this approach by applying it for Turkish music mood detection. The methodology followed in this study consists of two main parts. In the first part, word embeddings are trained through a large collection of textual data, which includes more than 2.5 million Turkish documents gathered from the Internet, by using Word2Vec and GloVe algorithms. Subsequently, lyrics vectors are generated for the pre-processed lyrics selected for mood detection through the use of word embeddings that were trained initially. In the second part of the study, lyrics vectors are employed as features in music mood detection performed via various machine learning techniques. Besides, Turkish music mood detection is also done by using traditional bag-of-words approach, in which TF-IDF term weighting scheme is used, and Doc2Vec algorithm for comparison purposes. The effects of stemming of the words into their roots and filtering out the precompiled list of stop-words on the results are investigated as well. The results obtained from the study show the effectiveness of incorporating word embeddings generated using big textual data collection into the Turkish text classification process, which is clearly illustrated by the improved classification performance.Item Consumers’ mobile application usage in Turkey(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2017., 2016.) Gökce, Kevser Gülnur.; Döğerlioğlu, Özgür.Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), which allows employees to use their own mobile devices for work and connect to the corporate network, has getting more popular in many enterprises. Companies want to increase the efficiency and productivity of employees with decreasing the cost while employees prefer to use their own device in the work because they feel more comfortable and it eases the communication. BYOD has some advantages and disadvantages for both companies and employees. Organizations should think all of the effects of BYOD on their system and working environment. Although BYOD seems very attractive, companies and employees have some security concerns in different and various ways. The aim of this study is to explore employee and organization perspectives about BYOD. In this study, literature has been reviewed in order to develop a research model. Empirical part of the research has two parts: Qualitative and Quantitative. Manager’s opinions were determined through a series of interviews and then the findings were analyzed. In qualitative part, a questionnaire has been developed based on the research model. The English and Turkish versions of the questionnaire are in Appendix B and C, respectively.12 different interviews and 93 respondents were used in the analysis. It has been found that while organizations and employees believe BYOD having benefits in many ways, they also support the idea that security and privacy issues should not be ignored.Item A decision support system for production planning and scheduling in a smart factory environment(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2017., 2017.) Cinkılıç, Haktan.; Sencer, Aslı.With the industry 4.0 idea that emerged recently, manufacturing systems have been enhanced by advanced manufacturing technologies. These smart manufacturing systems can respond faster to the changes in the production plans which are mostly due to the updates in customer order quantities, order due dates, unexpected machine breakdowns, material supply problems, etc. This study aims to support the dynamic structure of smart factories by providing an efficient, effective and flexible platform for production planning and scheduling. In most of the studies in the literature, production control and scheduling plans have been handled separately and iteratively due their computational complexities. As an improvement, in this thesis a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) model is developed to optimize the integrated production plans and daily schedules with minimum total cost. Then, this optimization model is linearized and a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is generated to improve its computational performance. Finally, the optimization model is embedded into a web based decision support system (DSS) together with a database and user interface to provide an efficient, effective and flexible decision making environment in a smarter cyber-physical system. The DSS is verified with different test scenarios and its computational performance is measured.Item A privacy paradox: the power of technological surveillance and Its effect on information technology usage behavior(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2016., 2016.) Rençberoğlu, Emre.; Tanrıkulu, Zuhal. Thanks to developing technologies, reaching information has become easier and the big data concept started to be used in various fields. Today, almost all of the technologies which are used widely, such as the internet, mobile phones, computers and smart TVs, are capable of collecting and storing data. The data gathering activity is a routine process for almost all private companies and governments, which can result in incidents of exploitation and misuse. Moreover, some sociological impacts, which include self-censorship and changing perceptions, are considered one of the results of increasing information privacy concerns. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the literature by investigating the multidimensionality of information privacy concerns. For this purpose, a survey was conducted with 641 participants to measure the relationship between information privacy concerns with regard to news, regulations, user agreements, public beliefs and perceptions. Additionally, the association between information technology (IT) usage behavior and the dimensions of the information privacy concerns are examined. According to the analysis of survey data, demographic differences are important in terms of privacy concerns. News and regulations are highly associated with privacy concerns, but security perception is only related to the data collection dimension. Another finding of the research is that there is not a significant relationship between the information privacy concerns and IT usage behavior, except general IT tools.Item WEB mining issues: topic finding and focused crawling evaluation(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2006., 2006.) Uluhan, Eray.; Badur, Bertan Yılmaz.Web mining is defined as the process of using data mining techniques to automatically discover and extract information from semi-or unstructured Web documents and services. This study on Web mining consists of two sections, covering Web structure mining and Web content mining. In the first section, mostwidely accepted focused crawling algorithms and simple tree traversing algorithms are compared based on their page relevance, keyword predicate satisfaction and hitratio criteria. Using the URL tokens as an input resulted in higher performances for all criteria. In the second part, an automatic topic finding methodology through Web pages is proposed. Processing only list items on HTML pages returned from a search engine, it is expected to find related key concepts on a user-defined topic. The methodology is experimented using different parameters, such as number of pages, different keywords, stemming implementations, etc. The candidate concepts ordered in relevancy scores represent a high precision on user-defined topic.Item A decision support system for integrated optimization of production, transportation and pricing decisions in a supply chain(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2016., 2016.) İzer, Murat Umut.; Sencer, Aslı.In supply chains, the decisions regarding production, transportation and pricing are often handled separately. In this thesis study, a nonlinear programming model (NLP) is generated to optimize the production, transportation, and pricing decisions in a supply chain where substitute products are produced in multiple factories and sold at several markets. Under the cooperative competition of substitute products, these decisions are given centrally to maximize the total profit. Demands for the substitute products are realized as functions of their prices where the market shares are expressed as market share attraction models from the marketing literature. The NLP model is solved with different parameter settings and sensitivity analysis on the input parameters is made to provide managerial insights. Finally, a decision support system (DSS) is developed to provide an efficient, effective and flexible decision making environment. The DSS includes a relational database for input and output data, a model base that includes the generated NLP model and a graphical user interface that provides interaction between the user, the database, and the solver for the NLP model.Item A decision support system for inventory management of information technology spare parts(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2015., 2015.) Turan, Aycan.; Metin, Bilgin.Rising operational costs have become a major issue in developing countries, causing many leading information technology (IT) companies to focus on inventory optimization. This thesis research concentrates on inventory policy optimization and decision making process. We develop a decision support system (DSS) that provides an optimal control of IT spare part inventory to minimize the total cost. The system supports a continuous review (Q, r) inventory policy and a periodic review (S, s) inventory policy options for managing the spare parts inventory. The DSS includes a forecast model to estimate the failure rates of different device types purchased in different time periods. It is also enhanced by a simulation environment which evaluates different inventory management scenarios and choses the optimum one. Next, the DSS is applied to a real system and optimum inventory management scenario is determined according to the cost and service performances. Experimental design analysis is performed to measure the sensitivity of optimal total cost with respect to input parameters such as inventory holding cost, part order cost and penalties. The DSS provides an efficient, effective and flexible decision making environment for the optimal control of IT spare parts.Item Estimating defaults in organized security lending markets: an empirical study on a default indicator(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2014., 2014.) Ösken, Latif Cem.; Onay, Ceylan.Security lending is a simple financial transaction that leads to credit risk like every other lending transaction. This thesis aims to analyse the dynamics of the security lending process and lending markets in order to identify the variables that can affect the credit risk arising from lending contracts and supplement the internal rating models commonly used for credit risk management with models that incorporate characteristics of the stock borrowed. Using the data provided by İstanbul Settlement and Custody Bank on the equity lending contracts of Takasbank Securities Lending Market between 2010 and 2012 as well as the data provided by Borsa İstanbul on Equity Market transactions for the same timeframe, this thesis focuses on whether stock price volatility, stock returns and the relative liquidity of lending market and equity market affect the defaults of lending contracts. The results of the thesis illustrate a statistically significant relationship between volatility and the default state of the lending contracts but fail to establish a connection between default states and stock returns or relative liquidity of markets.|Keywords : Security lending, Equity lending, Takasbank, Securities Lending Market, Credit risk management in security lending, Default estimation in security lending.Item Agent-based modelling and simulation of collaborative content creation: the curious case of Wikipedia(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2014., 2014.) Taşan, Erşan.; Badur, Bertan Yılmaz.Wikipedia is no doubt one of the most important collaborative informational products of human history. The collaborative effort that produces Wikipedia is of fundamental importance because the community includes anonymous, uncompensated editors and a lack of observable top-down hierarchy. In this study, we propose an agent-based model for Wikipedia users’ activity of collaborative article editing. In this graph-theoretical approach every user and article are represented as vertices in a multimodal affiliation network. When a user chooses to edit an article, an edge between the node of the user in question and that of the edited article, is created. User preferences, statuses, relative content quality of articles, distribution of collaboration and resulting relationships are examined in the network. We analyse input parameters’ effects on resulting principal graph characteristics, namely the clustering coefficient, the path length, the small world characteristic Q, degree correlation, and degree distribution. Simulation findings point out that, users’ area of interest dimensions and active user percentage are positively correlated with the total edge count in the graph; therefore, the encyclopaedia quality. Conversely, good article threshold parameters raise high-quality article specifications and are negatively correlated with the total edit count in the encyclopaedia. We recommend an easier, automated process for the selection of good and featured articles of Wikipedia. Experiments have demonstrated that lowering the barrier of high quality status for articles, results in more effort and quality for the encyclopaedia as a whole. Additionally, we recommend more internal link concentration in good and featured articles, in order to spread the effort of their successful editors.Item The technical challenges of cloud computing and their effects on usage(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Furthermore, responses to close-ended questions are analyzed by using The Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS) software, reliabilities aremeasured by Cronbach‟s Alpha analysis and hypothesis are examined via using Multiple Regression and Linear Regression analyses and the model is tested with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) technique. Besides these responses, open-ended questions arealsotaken into consideration. When analyzing data gathered from close-ended questions, it is found that Mobile Addiction, Parental Surveillance, Social Relations and Frequency of Using Mobile Phone Applications are affecting the mobile behavior of the participants in educational contexts. Moreover, as for open-ended questions, participants stated that they use many mobile applications in their learning environment in terms of contacting with friends, watching educational videos, finding course material via internet.Item Empirical and simulation based analysis of detailing activities of a pharmaceutical company in Turkey(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2014., 2014.) Demirbacak, Nuri Sezay.; Darcan, Osman Nuri.In this thesis, the impact of detailing activities on prescription behaviour of physicians and their carryover effects are studied using the geographic location based sales and detailing activity data of five products from a leading pharmaceutical company in Turkey. First, the relationship of sales to detailing activities and to activities made in different customer segments are analyzed using a linear regression model. It has been found that a significant relationship exists between total detailing activities and sales for four out of five products. As to the activities made in different customer segments, significant results are observed for only one product. Secondly, the outcomes of the regression are used to develop an agent based model to predict the impact and the carryover effect of detailing activities on different customer segments. The outcomes of the simulation model, when run with the best fitted impact and carryover ratios for the selected regions, reveal 10-15% deviation amongst the actual monthly values and the predicted values.Item Significant and relevant factors that can affect the sustainability of mobile learning(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2014., 2014.) Coşkun Setirek, Abide.; Tanrıkulu, Zuhal.Educational leaders are concerned about whether m-learning initiatives can address current educational needs and intent of m-learning, have potential to be adopted by users, maintain a certain condition indefinitely or make progress and adapt to possible changes or not. This study aims to facilitate and promote future empirical research with not only specifying the current status of m-learning, but also investigating and improving factors affecting m-learning sustainability. The literature was reviewed about current sustainability factors, educational needs, adoption, success factors, limitations and challenges, and potential changes and risk of mobile learning projects. The following critical sustainability issues were identified and discussed: technological, developmental, pedagogical, assessment, psychological, social, legal & ethical, organizational & institutional and financial issues. In addition to literature, investigations were made in order to obtain additional sustainability factors. One investigation was based on formal interviews conducted with 11 heads of distance education centers and lecturers from seven universities. Another investigation was made for understanding the significance of these factors on m-learning sustainability. This investigation was based on a survey research conducted with lecturers and students from universities which have m-learning facilities and m-learning staff from management, system and support, content development and design, and assessment units. The results were evaluated and analyzed, and a conceptual model for m-learning sustainability was developed. The paper concludes that it was observed that some m-learning sustainability factors are critically important and many m-learning initiatives disregard these factors. The study may provide guidelines to m-learning initiatives for a sustainable mobile learning.
