(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2010., 2010.) Ala, Hüseyin.; Gök, Fatma.
This case study examines the current state of in-service training activities in a public school based on teachers’ and administrators’ evaluation. It is a qualitative analysis addressing three categories of questions which relate to the current state of in-service training activities in a public school along with teachers’ and administrators’ evaluation of in-service training activities provided by the Ministry of National Education. The participants of the study are the teachers and administrators of a public elementary school situated in a low income, high migration area in Ümraniye, Istanbul. Regarding the data collection, in the first phase, there was an analysis of documentation and an interview with the assistant manager responsible for the implementation of in-service trainings was performed to understand the current situation of in-service training activities in the school. In the second phase of the study, semi-structured interviews were applied according to the Teachers’/Administrators’ Evaluation of In-Service Training: Semi Structured Interview Form. The findings indicated that the school where this research was performed had brought about a general perspective on the current instances of in-service training and opened new matters of discussion related to the design of in-service training practices. There appear significant problems regarding teachers’ and administrators’ approaches toward in-service training, trainers, time, place, prior analysis of needs and trainings on technology.

The educational needs of mothers of children aged 60 to 72 months: The socio-economic differences
(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2018., 2018.) Uysal, Senem Han.; Kızıltepe, Zeynep.
This study aims to identify the educational needs of mothers of children aged 60 to 72 months. It also intended to understand if there are any differences between mothers coming from different socio-economic background, which in this study, is the high socio-economic status mothers and low socio-economic status mothers. To accomplish this, a qualitative study with 33 in depth interviews was carried out in one public and one private school. A semi-structured interview with open-ended questions was applied to the mothers to understand their educational needs about parenting. The results of the study demonstrate that, although some significant differences were observed in terms of the educational needs of mothers, there are also some common issues. Differences in the demographic and family characteristics such as the schools they send their children to, their educational level and socioeconomic status was helpful in understanding the results. In any case, no matter how similar or different the results of the two groups were, it can be stated that the results of the study helped understanding the educational needs of mothers of children aged 60 to 72 months. It is assumed that, the data collected in this study can be useful in revisiting existing parent education programs for caregivers of children at an early age. In spite of the limitations of the study, it will make certain contributions to the field, especially in reviewing existing parent education programs for mothers.

Needs assesment in adult education in reference to Şişli-Gültepe people's education center in Istanbul
(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 1983., 1983.) Çakır, Turgut.; Oğuzkan, Turhan.
The purpose of this study is to assist the Şişli-Gültepe People's Center in planning its adult education activities to serve the residents of the Sisli district in Istanbul by a need assessment survey. The Şişli district was conceived in terms of three socio-economically distinct regions. The survey was conducted on a sample of 140, using one respondent from each household. A total of 58 men and 82 women were interviewed, who were selected randomly using the cluster of streets in two regions, and the cluster of apartments in one region. An interview guide was developed by the investigator in order to collect compatible data. The survey findings indicated that there was a range of needs as expressed by the sample in the district for adult education courses and activities to be offered by the center. The majority of these expressed needs centered around homeactivities, reflecting the preferences of the larger number of females over males in the sample. It was also found that the Şişli-Gültepe People's Education Center needed better publicity in the district. The findings of this study should be considered as an attempt to identify the major areas which need attention. Due to the limited size of the sample and the other practical limitations associated with the project, the study stands as an exploratory work in the area of need assessment where, at present, little research is available.
