Abstract
In this thesis, model based idle speed control of a diesel engine is studied. Since diesel engine models derived from first principles are very complicated, a mean-value diesel engine model which captures the dynamics of the engine to a reasonable accuracy is used. Different operating conditions of a diesel engine are expressed as system uncertainties in the model. Appropriate weighting functions are proposed for expressing these system uncertainties. A robust controller is designed via mu synthesis with D-K iteration. An order reduction algorithm based on Hankel singular values is performed for the implication of the controller. Two different types of idle speed control problem is investigated. It is concluded that both simulations and experiments give satisfactory results for the two problems.
