Item Behçet Necatigil ve Hermann Hesse'nin şiirlerinde ruh-beden çatışması(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2004., 2004.) Tezgör, Hilmi.; Arslan, Nur Gürani,Behçet Necatigil and Hermann Hesse are two great poets with many common points, even though they seem quite different at first sight. Behçet Necatigil, whose works reflect his life, has the same concept also for the translated poems. Necatigil, rather preferred working on poets, who have similar points of view with him, who he could build spiritual and sensitive connections with, and of course on those he liked. Hesse was one of those. This thesis approaches the tension that a person goes through when working on his/her self-realization and happiness, that is present in Necatigil's and Hesse's work within the frame of the Austrian philologist Leo Spitzer. In this thesis, concentration is on 'soul-body duality' in Neactigil's and Hesse's works, whether there is a final consensus, the differences or similarities concerning the theme used, how the poets use the spaces and its reflections on one, again differeneces and similarities of how the tension is expressed in words and finally on techniques used to transfer these issues into literature. In Necatigil's works, soul "went away" but the body "stayed"; in Hesse's works both soul and body "went away."Item İhsan Oktay Anar'ın Amat romanında mitlerin işlevi(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2009., 2009.) Uğurlu, Fırat.; Arslan, Nur Gürani,In this thesis, I examine the novel Amat (2005) by İhsan Oktay Anar in the context of myth building. As the first stage of my examining, the myths as they are used within the novel and their original versions are compared in terms of uses of the theme, and motifs. By doing this, the thesis aims to show how myths are used to help building the plot and overall structure of the novel. Myths in the novel also become a different ground from history for creating the story and narrating the past by questioning social discourses, values and ideals including history writing. In this study, I argue that Anar’s work questions the concept of the official history and utilizes myths in order to understand and narrate a past untold outside the perspective of this history. It is also seen in this novel that the writer put forward his opinions on the contemporary issues.Item İlhan Berk'in şiirlerinde anneye dönüş arzusu(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2004., 2004.) Öztürk, Veysel.; Arslan, Nur Gürani,When it IS compared with his contemporaries, ilhan Berk has espoused imprecise style III poetry. This understanding of poetry brings in its train the infiltration of content of the uncounsciousness to the text of poem consistently. Psychoanalytic criticism which aims to analyze unconsciousness of the poet and the text enables re-fictionalization and re-interpretation of the work. In this regard, in order to interpret works of ilhan Berk, it is inevitable to take what opportunity is presented by psychoanalytic criticism that intends to explore uncounscious of the text of poetry. When approaching to ilhan Berk's poetry, one says that the main desire in his works is "desire of the return to the mother." That desire shows itself in two forms as "the return to the womb of mother" and "the return to the early childhood in which child and mother were unified." "Desire of the return to the mother" could be followed by means of four main themes in his poems which are "loneliness" "sexual intercourse", "sea" and "death." Loneliness does not only express an experience which is peculiar to the persona who lost his mother, but also at the same time the loss of a bygone transcendental identity of the mother ad infinitum who has her child snatched to the world of culture. Nonetheless, "sexual intercourse", "return to the sea" and "death" are uncounscious ways that were invented by the persona in order to compensate for his separation from the mother. The aim of this study is to pursue "desire of the return to the mother" by means of psychoanalytic criticism in ilhan Berk's works who is one of the outstanding poets in Turkish literature. VlllItem Representation of the non-Muslim Ottomans in modern Turkish drama (1874-1912)(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2009., 2009.) Firidinoğlu, Nilgün.; Arslan, Nur Gürani,This thesis studies the forms of representation of the non-Muslim Ottomans in modern Turkish drama (1874-1912). Representations of the non-Muslims in Karagöz plays are primarily examined to show the reflection of the break led by the nationalism movement which hit the 19th century and the reform process starting with the Tanzimat period on non-Muslim representations in plays more clearly. This study analyzes the reasons why non-Muslims’ representations were limited in the works of playwrights who tried to bring in a “national” character to literature in general and drama in particular although non-Muslims were the pioneers of the Western theatre in the Ottoman Empire. It discusses the forms of “representation” and “perception” of the non-Muslims in accordance with the economic and political changes in the Ottoman Empire focusing on the copyright plays which include non- Muslim characters. It is argued that the sense of “we” and “they” originated from the nationalistseparatist activities which grew stronger in the 19th century in the Ottoman Empire and the economic balances which turned to the non-Muslims’ benefit determines the representation of the non-Muslim characters. It is maintained that an idea of “we” is dominant in the plays written in that period as non-Muslim elements which sometimes mark the religious identity and sometimes the ethnic identity are not included at all or conditionally included.Item Representing social order on the stage: an analysis of Şemsettin Sâmi’s plays within the framework of literary genres and themes(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2015., 2015.) Özer, Sevgin.; Arslan, Nur Gürani,This thesis examines three plays by Şemsettin Sâmi, Besâ yahut ahde Vefâ (1875), Seydi Yahyâ (1875), Gâve (1876) within the framework of literary genres and themes, in order to reveal their intellectual and social messages and relationship with politics. Sâmi is a Tanzimat intellectual who worked as a clerk, journalist, translator, dictionary writer and novelist. He used the theater as a tool to educate people like many other intellectuals in the Tanzimat period, an era of political and social innovation when Ottoman society had just met with the Western theater. Sâmi’s plays have not been examined as much as the plays of his colleagues, famous names of the era, Namık Kemal and Abdülhak Hâmit. Generally he has not been distinguished as a political play writer. However, in his works by showing class injustice and inequality he makes social criticism through the personal problems and adventures of the protagonists. Moreover, Sâmi’s Albanian origin affected the subjects of his plays. In this thesis, the plays of the author are studied in terms of their associations with melodrama genre which is very suitable for intriguing the audience and making clear and effective statements. The three melodramas studied in this thesis are among the first examples of the Western style Turkish theatre. Şemsettin Sâmi produced purposeful and political plays; suggested solutions for the social problems that he pointed out; expressed the qualifications of “the ideal citizen” and drew a social order representation on the stage.Item The representation of the disabled in Turkish children's literature (1969-2009)(Thesis (M.A.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2010., 2010.) Ünal, Ayfer.; Arslan, Nur Gürani,This pioneer study aims to investigate the representation of the disabled characters in 40 fictional narratives written for children during the period 1969-2009. The earliest date that a narrative with a disabled character was reached was the year 1969, therefore this research starts in 1969. This thesis strives to investigate the changes in the representation of the disabled during the past 40 years by analysing 40 narratives for children. The image of an isolated “poor cripple” watching other children play behind a window is slowly giving its place to an active child, playing, skating, studying, in short an active member of the society. It is also found that the disableds are being perceived as “different” whereas the early narratives portrayed the disabled as “lacking” or as “less” or “faulty”. The social model approach which places the responsibility on the society to make the necessary changes to include the disabled in the society is only seen in the dreams of the disabled children. However, in two recent narratives it was possible to show buds of a change in this direction. Peer ridicule is discovered as the major problem that agonizes the disabled children. The majority of the narratives show the disabled as receiving help and support although in recent years it was possible to detect characters that are portrayed as equals and that influence the course of the events but they are rare. The narratives were analysed in terms of family, school, peer relations and relations with the outer world. After the analysis of these relations, the final analysis focused on the inner world of the disabled. It was found that it was quite hard to reach the inner world of the disabled because of the secondary positions of the characters within the text. The feelings belong mainly to other characters and how they felt when they encountered a disabled. In cases where the inner world of the disabled was reached the common feeling was a longing for being “normal” and a desire to be accepted as one is.The role of language both as an attitude former and enhancer was also investigated and it was possible to show the effects of the “ableist” subjects language. The use of the language by the “normal” has the potential to create prejudices and biases towards the disabled. The change in the way to adress the individual with a disability from “the crippled-sakat” to “disabled-özürlü”to “handicapped-engelli” was shown in the narratives and the effects of these words on the individuals with disabilities were discussed with examples from the narratives. In conclusion, the discussion suggests that children’s literature should be evaluated carefully in terms of the representation of the disabled, of the language used and of the biases and prejudices created by stereotypic representations.Item The role of the theatre in the construction of state ideology(Thesis (Ph.D.)-Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2010., 2010.) Dicle Başbuğ, Esra.; Arslan, Nur Gürani,This dissertation examines how theatrical works written during the period of Halkevleri (People’s Houses) functioned to communicate Kemalist ideology to the public and investigates the particular role of these plays in the transformation of social consciousness during the establishment of the modern nation state. For Kemalism, self-describe through its core principles of republicanism, nationalism, populism, statism, secularism and revolutionalism, the 1930’s was a period in which it became clear that a reform movement could not be fully successful or long-lived without public support. Economic, political and social developments both in Turkey and abroad made clear the necessity for Kemalism to seek public support and to organize this support through rapid institutionalization. In this period the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (Republican People’s Party) served as a critical bridge between the public and Kemalist ideology. A decision was taken to close all non-governmental organisations and associations active at the time and to establish Halkevleri as official party organs. During the rise of the modern nation state, Halkevleri functioned in multiple domains in order to educate the public in line with the principles of Kemalist ideology and to encourage the public to embrace these principles. In addition to the fields of language and literature, sports, history, and the arts, theater played a particularly important role in 1930’s Turkey at a time when less than twenty percent of the population was literate. The government capitalized on the accessability and persuasiveness of theater in its attempts to gain public support for Kemalist ideology. This period saw a flourishing of scriptwriting in line with explicit rules stated by the directives of Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi and Halkevleri. Much effort went into harnessing the persuasive powers of theater as a means of propaganda when attempting to garner support for nationhood and raise consciousness of the role of the citizenry in a unified nation state. Over a hundred plays were written on the occassion of the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey adressing the Turkish History Thesis and Kemalism’s village development projects in the hopes of getting broad based grassroots support for Kemalist ideology.Item The voice of diary self: self construction in Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’s diary and its effect on “Canonic Tanpınar(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2014., 2014.) Aydın Satar, Nesrin.; Arslan, Nur Gürani,Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar (1901-1962) has a canonical position in Turkish literature by the effects of his academical and literary works and the subjects in these works about social problems, civilization crisis, changing Turkey, past culture and continuity. In the period of the Republic, Tanpınar, placed himself in an indigenous/eastern but modern and unique literary field. As a figure outside of the reform literature, he could not be included in the canon. However, canonical position of the author had begun to change with the break of Kemalizm together with the change of political power after 1970s and the society’s questioning of the civilization change. Again, the canonical position of the author, who has acquired this position by the statutory, literary and public authorities representing the relation of canon with that what is political, literary and popular, has changed with the publication of his diaries. Published in 2007, Tanpınar’s diaries, namely “Günlükleri Işığında Tanpınar’la Başbaşa” caused the emergence of different segments assessing these diaries. Besides the group considering the diaries as a bomb that destroyed the image of “Magnificent Tanpınar”, another group of critics reminded the fact that Tanpınar was an “ordinary” man like every one else. In the emergence of these groups and the change of perception about Tanpınar, the opposition between the built-in/canonical Tanpınar and the new identities the author set up by his diaries was effective. This thesis manifests the effects of the public and private selves of Tanpınar that the author set through his diaries on the new canonical position of him. In doing this manifestation, through probing into the concept of canon and canon in Turkish literature, it investigates Tanpınar’s changing canonical position before the publication of his diaries and his new position resulting from the diaries. Moreover, it investigates the changed perception of a canonic author through his diaries by examining the “destroying” effects of above mentioned selves on the image of “new” Tanpınar.Item Writing as a space: metadiegetic narratives in Kırmızı Pelerinli Kent and Romantik Bir Viyana Yazı(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences, 2017., 2017.) Öztürk, Zehra.; Arslan, Nur Gürani,In this thesis study, through analysing Aslı Erdoğan’s novel Kırmızı Pelerinli Kent and Adalet Ağaoğlu’s novel Romantik Bir Viyana Yazı, I would like to assert the idea that “writing” provides a space to the characters that have already become placeless for various reasons. To this end, I will point out that what makes this possible is the new layers of narrative born by the fact that the main characters of both novels write novels that share the same title with the ones in which they exist. I will also discuss the opportunities offered by the narrative techniques and elements of both novels, to their characters who avoid the reality of the outer world and seek to create a brand-new space for themselves. To achieve that, I will focus on the metadiegetic narratives, which enable “writing” to serve as a space for the characters, as well as on the functions of these narratives, by employing Genette’s terminology of narrative levels.
