Item Religious and moral thought in a 15th century compilation of versified folktales(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2022., 2022.) Sürücü, Betül.; Oktay, Zeynep. The subject of this thesis is the religious and moral thought in a 15th century compilation of versified folktales, which narrates the miracles and legends of Prophet Muhammad and Ali b. Abi Talib. One of the primary purposes of the study is to examine these folktales in the historical and literary context of the compilation itself, to investigate how these orally inherited narratives produce a religious and moral thought within the vernacularization dynamic of Turkish and what functions this thought fulfills on their readers/listeners. Another aim of the study is to present the transliterated edition and analysis of the oldest known copy of Aksaraylı İsa's Dāsitān-ı İsmāʿīl and Mevt-i Muhammed-nāme, an anonymous work with no copies other than this compilation. The introduction chapter provides a theoretical framework for the unique role of the folktales in the vernacularization process and the function of semiotic elements, which manifest themselves through mythical narratives and sensory language, in the transmission of "religious" meaning. The second chapter discusses the place of the dâsitân genre within the mecmua literature and the audience that it addresess and gives the previous publications and summaries of the folktales. The third chapter reveals the moral codes and the implicit messages of the folktales conveyed to the audience through the heroic role of Prophet Muhammad and Ali b. Abi Talib with close reading. The fourth chapter examines Mevt-i Muhammed-nāme and Dāsitān-ı İsmāʿīl and gives the transliteration of the texts.Item Representations of women in the miscellanea titled Kitāb-ı Hikāyāt(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2022., 2022.) Avcı, Sergen.; Hüner Cora, Nazlı İpek.Scholarly interest in prose stories has been gaining momentum, and this master’s thesis aims to contribute to this growing area of scholarship. I decided to study a story miscellanea titled Kitāb-ı Hikāyāt in my master’s thesis and analyze the stories in the manuscript by focusing on gender and particularly the representations of women. This study consists of four parts. The first chapter, “The Universe of Prose Stories,” introduces the genre of prose stories based on the previous studies and reveals its characteristics by taking this miscellanea as an example. Then, it presents the aim and scope of this thesis by reviewing the research on prose stories and the studies approaching it with gender analysis. The second part, “The Universe of Manuscripts,” introduces the manuscript titled Kitāb-ı Hikāyāt. Afterward, it discusses its intertextuality with other manuscripts by pointing out available versions. Lastly, it presents stories’ summaries in this miscellanea. The third chapter, “The Universe of Women in Prose Stories,” discusses various representations of women in the narratives. It also questions the effects of age, social class, economic status, sexuality, etc. on womanhood. The fourth and final chapter includes the transcription of the first seven stories that form the backbone of the analyses. This M.A. thesis aims to contribute to the studies of Ottoman literature and gender studies by introducing prose stories and offering an analytical reading through a gender lens. It also seeks to increase the visibility of prose stories in academia.Item The interaction of oral and written traditions in the works of Âşık Maksut Feryadî(Thesis (M.A.) - Bogazici University. Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, 2023., 2023) Erdem, E. Nisan.; Öztürk, Veysel.; Oktay, Zeynep. In this thesis, what it means to be a minstrel in the contemporary literary environment in Turkey is examined, and for this, the poems of Maksut Koca (Feryadî), his performance- based literary activity and strategies to make himself visible in the public socio-economically are used as examples. In the first part of the study, the electronic medium, which has become increasingly widespread today and is important for positioning the minstrel literature in the cultural production of the modern age, has been examined in detail within the framework of Walter Ong's concept of secondary orality. In the second part, the relationship between Maksut Koca's works and his life with oral, written and contemporary electronic media is studied. In the third chapter, it has been taken into account that there is not only a linear relationship between the work, the author and the reader, but also a capital relationship, and that there are intermediaries in the process of the creation and printing of the work. For this reason, today's minstrel literature is viewed as a "literary event" in which books and secondary orality play a role in its circulation. In this part, which is shaped as a study of literary sociology, minstrel books, publishing houses and Maksut Koca's printed work Sular Yandı are examined. At the end of the study, the written text of two interviews with Maksut Koca is added.
